Andreia C. Gomes is a Biologist with a PhD in Neurology (2004) from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. She is Associate Professor at the Department of Biology in the University of Minho, Portugal (joined as Assistant Professor in 2007) and vice-director of the Center for Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA, https://cbma.uminho.pt, since 2022). She served for several years in the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences and was part of the Directive Council of the Department of Biology. She has extensive experience in different course commissions (C1 to C3 level), currently is the director of the Master in Biophysics and Bionanosystems (since 2022) and integrates the commission of the PhD program on Molecular and Environmental Biology (since 2014). Organized Advanced Postgraduate Courses every year since 2010 on nanotechnology (except 2017 and 2023). ***** Her current research interests are focused on the development of bioinspired drug delivery systems to promote human well-being. This implies a wide range of approaches from screening bioactive compounds extracted from organisms such as plants, macroalgae or marine sponges, to devising multifunctional nanodevices with components that may be produced by cell factories or using eco-friendly strategies such as green synthesis. To study the interface between nanostructured materials and cells and tissues, as to optimize biological and/or therapeutic effect, her group has implemented in vitro 2D/3D cell culture assays and complementary zebrafish-based approaches. ***** Most of Andreia Gomes's research implies technology/prototype development at the laboratory scale and that translates into several projects with links to industry (from establishment of a R&D center for cosmetics development to nanotechnology for theranostics of rheumatoid arthritis (FP7 project Nanofol), screening of algae extracts for green synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles for neurodegenerative disease therapies-project ATLANTIDA ¿ Platform for the monitoring of the North Atlantic ocean and tools for the sustainable exploitation of the marine resources. I was also a team member of project ECOBiB. Eco-Innovative Bag-In-Box Solutions (also co-financed by Compete2020, Portugal 2020 and European Union through FEDER), increasing a company's innovation ability in producing multi-layer film for Bag in Box wine packaging. In REPEL+ we validated the safety of novel solutions for anti-malaria mosquito repellants developed with a regional company using several in vitro and in vivo assays. ***** This has led to submission of 5 patents and co-founding a spin-off in 2010 (Nanodelivery ¿ I&D em Bionanotecnologia, Lda.). Since 2007, she has participated in raising funding for the University of Minho in excess of EUR5,500k, and, as a principal investigator, I have secured funds >EUR750k since 2016. This does not include the projects associated with the spin-off, totaling more > EUR500k to develop (and patent) controlled nucleic acid delivery technology. *****Ample experience in supervision of all levels, from postdoctoral (concluded 1 researcher, 7 students), PhD students (9 concluded, 6 on-going), MSc students (>60 concluded, 7 on-going), undergraduate students (>15 concluded), >10 scholarships financed by projects. *****Edited a book and 2 special issues, and published in indexed international journals with peer-review >105 original articles, 17 reviews, 6 book chapters . *****She integrated evaluation panels for individual grants and projects for several funding agencies (national: FCT, international: Cost Actions, Latvian Council of Science, Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, JSC National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation, Czech Science Foundation GACR). She has been involved in several science dissemination activities targeting different levels of society in general, at the University and in local schools or institutions.
