Carla Vitorino (CV) graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2007 from the University of Coimbra (UC), obtained her PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, in the specialty of Pharmaceutics, in 2013. CV served as Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, FFUC (2014-2018), and worked as a Researcher within the framework of the project CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-030752 (Jan-Aug 2019). Currently, she is Assistant Professor, in the Pharmaceutical Technology area, at the same institution. CV is an integrated researcher at the Coimbra Chemistry Centre, currently a part of the associate laboratory Institute of Molecular Sciences (IMS). She has been working on the application of nanotechnology in drug permeation enhancement strategies for transdermal, oral, and drug delivery systems to brain targeting, which has resulted in the publication of several scientific papers in peer-reviewed high-impact journals. A highlight for publications in prestigious pharmaceutical journals (Journal of Controlled Release, Cancer Letters, Drug Discovery Today). It brings together vast experience in pharmaceutical technology, standing out in the areas of nanotechnology and regulation. She was the principal investigator (PI) of the PTDC / MHC-CED / 2658/2014 project, which aimed to develop nanomedicines as a therapeutic alternative in the treatment of glioblastoma, and the PI of the 01/SAICT/2021-SAICT-181224 (CCDRC) and 2022.06174.PTDC Projects, and NANOPEP 10.54499/2022.06174.PTDC aiming for new PoCs establishment. She was also co-PI of the project CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-030752, whose main objective is the development of a multifunctional Nose-to-Brain system for the treatment of drug-resistant depression. Her main research interests are nanotechnology, controlled release, and the development of new drug delivery systems in a Quality by Design perspective. CV published 83 articles in international journals, with an h-index of 28 (Google Scholar), 2903 citations, edited 4 books (1 additional book edition ongoing), 5 Special Issues (2 ongoing), is the author of 24 book chapters, 1 Cover, 53 oral communications (24 oral communications per invitation), 7 conference papers/abstracts, and 60-panel communications at scientific meetings. She is a member of the editorial board of 4 journals and has been a reviewer in 23 international scientific journals. 4 International Patent applications resulted from the projects she coordinated/collaborated. Integrated the world's Top 2% Scientists list in 2022 and 2023 of Elsevier Editorial. Young Investigator Award of Bioinspired and Biomimetic Delivery Focus Group, CRS2021. She has contributed to teaching at the FFUC through coordination and collaboration in 16 curricular units (4 as coordinator), of the Biomedical Pharmacy and Bioanalytical Sciences, Int Master in Pharm Sciences, Master in Pharm Technology (current Coordinator), DrugsR&D and Pharmaceutical Sciences Doctoral Programs, and supervision of undergraduate, MSc and Ph.D. students. Supervisor of 2 Ph.D. and 6 master's students (concluded). Currently, CV supervises 5 Ph.D. students (4 in an industry setting) and 5 master's students (3 in the pharm industry). Also, supervised 29 integrated master's degree students, and co-oriented 14 national (pre-graduated) and 9 international students (1 BSc, 6 MSc, 1 PhD, and 3 PostDoc). She was a member of 9 doctoral juries, 10 master's juries, and >40 juries of the master's degree in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. She has collaborated with the Pharm Industry in the scope of the provision of services and consulting in the area of Pharmaceutical Technology. CV integrated Nano2Clinic and CA17103, and currently Translacore and Net4Brain COST Actions, has organized and moderated international and national congresses and is involved in several outreach activities for the promotion of science.
