Guillermin Agüero Chapin. Auxiliary Researcher (PhD) at CIIMAR - Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental, Universidade do Porto (UP), Portugal (2018-up to the present). Majored in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1998) at the Universidad Central de Las Villas (UCLV), (Cuba & Spain). Master degree (2009) in Biochemistry from the Medicine School "Dr. Zerafin de Zarate Ruiz", Cuba (Excellent). PhD in Biology awarded with honours by UP, Portugal (2009-2013). The PhD thesis was focused on the development of graphical-numerical method called TI2BioP for detecting remote functional and evolutionary signals in gene/protein/peptide classes of interest for drug discovery. Postdoc fellow (2014-2018) funded by the FCT at CIIMAR, UP, in the topic: "EvoNeering: An Evolutionary Platform to Engineer the Synthesis of Bioactive Peptides" that leveraged previous expertise in alignment-free (AF) methodologies to unravel enzymatic activities of ancestral A-domains and how they could be used for innovating bioactive peptides. My overall research expertise has been related to the (i) molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques applied to plant and microbial biotechnology (ii) chemo/bioinformatics applied to drug discovery/design, (iii) machine learning and big data-based classifiers (iv) integration of heterogeneous data and algorithms to address evolutionary topics (v) complex networks to analyse/predict AMP classes. The research in these areas and the stays at Universities from Italy, Belgium, Spain, Ecuador; Mexico, Cuba and Portugal motivated my current research interest: The integration of Omics Data from Marine Invertebrates and Screening Tools to Unveil promising AMPs to develop a Next Generation of Antibiotics. My research experience is mainly gathered in 46 publications in the WoS (20 in the last 5 years), 90% of them are placed in Q1 peer-reviewed journals that have received > 660 citations (h-index of 12). In the last 5 years, have been first and corresponding author in 16 and 6 papers, respectively. Have two books published (1) ¿Alignment-Free Models in Plant Genomics (2010)¿ at Nova Science Publishers, USA and (2) Computational Approaches in Discovery & Design of Antimicrobial Peptides (2023)¿ at the MDPI publisher (Switzerland). Have attended to > 30 scientific conferences either by oral invitation or poster presentation. Recently has been scientific member and chairperson of the sessions in MOL2NET online conference (2020-2024). Guest Editor in the Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry (2015), Antibiotics (2021-2024) and Frontiers in Bioinformatics (2022-2024) journals and received the Annual Award of the Cuban Academy of Sciences (2015). Co-directed PhD and MSc. theses on orthologs detection (2016) and new algorithms for functional enzyme classification (2021), respectively. Currently, I am co-supervising two PhD theses: (i) Computational Intelligence at the Computer Science Department of the University of Granada, Spain, and (ii) Sea Venoms: molecular and ecological innovations of cnidarians and mollusks at Biology program of FCUP (U. Porto). In the last 5 years, have participated in 4 FCT projects being Co-PI in the PTDC/CTA-AMB/31774/2017 project and PI at the COB 2023 project entitled "Computer-Aided Search for Next Generation Antibiotics from Cephalopods' Salivary Glands Proteomes", recently funded by CIIMAR with 10 000¿. Have attended in Academic Boards in Portugal (Master, 2021), Spain and Italy (PhD, 2022-2023, 2022). Member of the Topic and Reviewer Board in Marine Drugs and Antibiotics Journals (2020-2024). Reviewer of prestigious journals like Scientific Reports, BMC Bioinformatics and J. Proteome Res.; and evaluator of national projects in Ecuador and Chile. My current research interest is in the field of discovery/design of peptide drugs assisted by classical and emerging computational tools from marine sources.
