Maria S. M. Mendes graduated in Biochemistry in 2019 at University of Aveiro, with a final project entitled "Novel systems for the controlled delivery of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs". During this period, she worked with the preparation of deep eutectic solvents (DES) comprising active pharmaceutical ingredients and their incorporation into biopolymer-based drug delivery systems for transdermal administration. This work resulted in oral communications in international conferences and in an original research article. In 2021 at the same institution, she obtained her MSc degree in Biochemistry - Specialization in Clinical Biochemistry, with the Master Thesis final classification of 19 (in a scale of 0-20). Her Master's dissertation was focused on the pretreatment of human fluids using three-phase partitioning systems for the diagnosis and prognosis of lung cancer. She worked as a researcher in the field of Chemical Engineering at the research group "Process and Product Applied Thermodynamics" (PATh), CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, Portugal, with a 12-month scholarship under a project funded by the FCT. Currently, she is a PhD student in Chemical Engineering at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Maria has worked with a diversity of scientific techniques having experience in formulation and characterization of deep eutectic solvents; experience in liquid-liquid extraction with aqueous biphasic systems (ABS); experience in characterization techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); experience in quantification techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
