I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering of the University of Aveiro, having completed my PhD in 2013 in physical-chemistry from the University of Porto. Published 35 research papers (Scopus h-index = 14, 1st author: 14 papers, corresponding author: 4 papers) and 1 book. Gave 16 conference talks, co-authored 70 conference communications, supervised 11 students (1 BSc, 8 MSc, 1 Post-doc and 1 Junior Researcher), gave Thermodynamics lectures as a teaching assistant (2019), am presently responsible for the Machine Learning part of e-project in the FAME-AIS Erasmus Mundus Master program (https://www.fame-master.eu/), was involved in 15 research projects (6 European), and recently received 2 awards (2021 CICECO Young Researcher Award and best poster prize at the 14th Physical Chemistry National Meeting in 2021). I am currently interested in database curation, data mining, machine learning and development of digital applications, for corrosion protection, design of smart nanocontainers, and nanosafety (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15287394.2017.1331597). * I have experience as a PI, leading project DATACOR (Smart Data to Design Corrosion Inhibitors), which combines corrosion science, molecular modelling and machine learning to produce web applications capable of being used by other researchers to design more efficient and safer corrosion protection solutions. Thus far, along with other publications based on numerical modelling (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jcis.2016.01.038 (IF: 8.1); https://doi.org/10.3390/CMDWC2021-09935), project DATACOR has resulted in the first paper from CICECO focused on ML (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcc.9b09538, special machine learning issue), an open data management web tool (https://datacor.shinyapps.io/cordata/) and a machine learning based application (https://datacor.shinyapps.io/datacortech/), thus establishing a new interdisciplinary approach in CICECO. * From 2016 to 2019, I was a leading member of FCT project SELMA (Unveiling the self-healing mechanisms associated with smart nanocontainers), where density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics were used to simulate the self-healing mechanisms associated with nanostructured coatings, resulting in publications in high impact factor journals, such as the Chemical Engineering Journal (IF 13.3, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cej.2018.02.061). * Currently, I am a task leader in European project COAT4LIFE (2021-2025, https://coat4life.com/), being responsible for coordinating all the machine learning work to be performed in collaboration with Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon GmbH. COAT4LIFE is expected to produce machine learning models made available through web apps to design corrosion protection solutions. I am also a member of the Management Committee of the COST ACTION CA22143, named European Materials Informatics Network (EuMINe, 2023-2027, https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA22143/), where artificial intelligence proctocols for materials science will be developed.
