Erika Laranjeira is an Economist with a specialization in Health Economics. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusíada Norte, responsible for the Curricular Units of Microeconomics (BSc. and Master), Macroeconomics, Public Finance, International Economics, and Industrial Organization (Master). She is also the Coordinator of the undergraduate and master’s degree in Economics. Prof. Laranjeira’s research combines economics and health in interesting ways. She has (1) studied the roles and limitations of information and communications technology in health, such as privacy issues of eHealth and the applications of telemedicine, (2) designed a new health indicator that is more sensitive than life expectancy at birth but that uses data widely available, greatly easing data burden in cross-country health outcomes research, (3) applied multiple imputation as a method to build a comprehensive health technology panel data set, which, in contrast to non-imputed data, could much better explain the role of technology in healthcare cost inflation, and (4) used just one question: “For me happiness is…” to dig deeper into the meanings of happiness and to study in what form certain variables like gender, literacy, etc., influence the concept of happiness. Prof. Laranjeira completed her PhD in Economics in June 2014 from Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Porto (FEP) with funding from FCT grant. Prior to her PhD studies, she worked at the Portuguese Ministry of Finance, where she participated in the implementation of an integrated system for the evaluation of the Public Administration’s performance. She has also worked as a health economist at a health care research and consulting organization, where she analyzed and published numerous reports on the burden and cost of diseases, economic evaluation of drugs, and budgetary impact models.
