I am a physician (FMUSP, BR, 1999) specialised in General and Internal Medicine (HCFMUSP, BR, 2003) and Travel Medicine (IHMT NOVA, 2018) and a scientist in Medical and Health Sciences with a PhD in Science/Host-Pathogen Interactions (ICBUSP, BR, 2011). My first postdoc training was at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC, PT, 2011-2012), where I studied the role of regulatory T cells in malaria blood stage. I used a malaria experimental rodent model and a spin-disc intra-vital microscope to record the behaviour of regulatory T cells in the liver of infected mice, providing insights into their impact on parasite immune evasion mechanisms (doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0081409). My second postdoc was at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM, PT, 2013-2016), where I studied the lack of sterile immunity to natural malaria infections using rodent models to liver and blood stages of the disease. In 2016-2017, I obtained medical recognition in Portugal, and since 2017, I have been a researcher at the IHMT NOVA, conducting studies, supervising Masters/PhD students, and teaching. As a postdoc on Micro-OPV (GHTM/FCT, 2017-2019), I studied the effect of oral poliomyelitis vaccine (OPV) on the gut and respiratory microbiota of OPV-revaccinated infants. I used deep sequencing analysis of the 16SrRNA genes to show an association between OPV and the development of a healthier microbiota composition in gut and respiratory tracts of revaccinated infants, suggesting non-specific effects of OPV and the need to mitigate the impact of OPV withdrawl (doi: 10.3389/fmicb.2022.1016220). As a hired PhD junior on PLASMDPG/PTDC/BIA-CEL/28456/2017 (2019-2021) and MALREP/PTDC/SAU-PAR/28459/2017 (2022), I studied the effect of endogenous and new or repurposed compounds, respectively, on the development of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in vitro. On PLASMDPG, I investigated the molecular mechanisms by which pyruvate kinase (PK)-deficient erythrocytes are resistant to Plasmodium infection, providing insights into potential host-directed therapies for malaria (doi:10.3389/fcimb.2022.840968, doi: 10.3390/ijms24021336). On MALREP, I helped to demonstrate the effect of natural compounds that block P. falciparum growth in vitro(doi: 10.3390/plants12040963). As PI on SUBFAM (2020-2025), I have studied the role of submicroscopic P. falciparum infections to keep malaria transmission in Guinea-Bissau. I have supervised a PhD (UI/BD/151069/2021, Global Health & Tropical Diseases, IHMT NOVA, 2019–2025) and showed the frequency, geo-mapping distribution and associated factors of submicroscopic P. falciparum infections in Guinea-Bissau (doi: 10.1186/s12936-024-05138-z). As a staff research assistant since 2023, in addition to do research, and supervise postgraduate students, I have taught Travel Medicine for physicians, conducted pre-travel consultations at the IHMT NOVA Travel Medicine Clinic, coordinated the Viral Infections Unit-Master in Tropical Health (IHMT NOVA), organised internal journal clubs, and represented the IHMT in the NOVA Executive Committee for Tourism and Hospitality. On RESMALDETECT (2023-2025), I have supervised a Master (Medical Parasitology, IHMT NOVA, 2023–2025) and showed the proof-of-principle and -concept of an innovative isothermal amplification approach for detection of pyrimethamine resistant P. falciparum. On Tryps-GB (2024-), I have supervised a Master (Tropical Health, IHMT NOVA, 2024-) and searched for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in Guinea-Bissau by PCR analysis of blood samples, filling a gap of more than 20 years without information on sleeping sickness in that country. On DxHub (HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-ACCESS-07, 2025–2029), a Greek-Portuguese initiative for PoC solutions for infectious disease diagnostics, I will develop the MalPoC-PCR for P. falciparum and P. vivax diagnosis.
