Jaime S. Cardoso received his B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999, his MSc in Mathematical Engineering in 2005, and his Ph.D. in Computer Vision in 2006, all from the University of Porto. Cardoso is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and a Researcher at INESC TEC. From 2012 to 2015, Cardoso served as President of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition, affiliated with the IAPR. Cardoso is also a Senior Member of IEEE since 2011. Cardoso serves regularly as a project evaluator for the European Commission. His research can be summed up in three major topics: computer vision, machine learning and decision support systems. Image and video processing focuses on medicine and biometrics. The work on machine learning cares mostly with the adaptation of learning to the challenging conditions presented by visual data, with a focus on deep learning and explainable machine learning. The particular emphasis of the work in decision support systems goes to medical applications, always anchored on the automatic analysis of visual data. Cardoso has co-authored 300+ papers, 120+ of which in international journals, which attracted 10000+ citations, according to google scholar. Cardoso has been the recipient of numerous awards, and has been regularly included in the list of World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University.

Deep transfer learning emerged as a new paradigm in machine learning in which a deep model is trained on a source task and the knowledge acquired is then totally or partially transferred to help in solving a target task. 24. Discriminative directional classifiers. In different areas of knowledge, phenomena are represented by directional-angular or periodic-data; from wind direction and geographical coordinates to time references like days of the week or months of the calendar. These values are usually represented in a linear scale, and restricted to a given range (e.g. [0,2 pi)), hiding the real nature of this information. Therefore, dealing with directiona. 2016. Background: Malaria is a leading cause of death and disease in many developing countries, where young children and pregnant women are the most affected groups. In 2012, there were an estimated 207 million cases of malaria, which caused approximately 627 000 malaria deaths. Around 80% of malaria cases occur in Africa, where the lack of access to malaria diagnosis is largely due to a shortage of exp. 2016. 28. A Cognitively-Motivated Framework for Partial Face Recognition in Unconstrained Scenarios. Humans perform and rely on face recognition routinely and effortlessly throughout their daily lives. 29. Robust classification with reject option using the self-organizing map. Reject option is a technique used to improve classifier's reliability in decision support systems. It consists in withholding the automatic classification of an item, if the decision is considered not sufficiently reliable. The rejected item is then handled by a different classifier or by a human expert. The vast majority of the works on this issue has been concerned with the development of reject. 2015. Micro-solder joint (MSJ) lifetime prediction methodology and failure analysis (FA) are to assess reliability by fatigue model with a series of theoretical calculations, numerical simulation and experimental method. Nowadays, video surveillance systems are taking the first steps toward automation, in order to ease the burden on human resources as well as to avoid human error. 34. Fingerprint Liveness Detection in the Presence of Capable Intruders. Fingerprint liveness detection methods have been developed as an attempt to overcome the vulnerability of fingerprint biometric systems to spoofing attacks. This assumption has led to the use of supervised techniques to estimate the performance of the methods, using. 2015. Sequeira,AF; Jaime Cardoso. http://repositorio.inesctec.pt/handle/123456789/6085.

  37. Signal transmission model for the substations grounding grid. The signal of the wireless sensor network in grounding grid, owing to energy loss, network congestion, path constraints and other factors, is easy to delay even partially losing. In order to ensure that the signal can be transmitted effectively in grounding grids for the substation, this paper presents a method based on traffic model of back-off balanced multiple sensor network cooperation model.. 2014. 38. Robust iris localisation in challenging scenarios. The use of images acquired in unconstrained scenarios is giving rise to new challenges in the field of iris recognition. Many works in literature reported excellent results in both iris segmentation and recognition but mostly with images acquired in controlled conditions. 39. A 3D low-cost solution for the aesthetic evaluation of breast cancer conservative treatment. Breast cancer conservative treatment (BCCT) is now the preferred technique for breast cancer treatment. The limited reproducibility of standard aesthetic evaluation methods led to the development of objective methods, such as the software tool Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment.cosmetic results (BCCT.core). 43. Assessing Cosmetic Results After Breast Conserving Surgery. "Taking less treating better" has been one of the major improvements of breast cancer surgery in the last four decades. The application of this principle translates into equivalent survival of breast cancer conserving treatment (BCT) when compared to mastectomy, with a better cosmetic outcome. While it is relatively easy to evaluate the oncological results of BCT, the cosmetic outcome is more diff. 2014. 48. The data replication method for the classification with reject option. Classification is one of the most important tasks of machine learning. Although the most well studied model is the two-class problem, in many scenarios there is the opportunity to label critical items for manual revision, instead of trying to automatically classify every item. In this paper we tailor a paradigm initially proposed for the classification of ordinal data to address the classification. 2013. A key issue in video object tracking is the representation of the objects and how effectively it discriminates between different objects. 50. Methods for the Aesthetic Evaluation of Breast Cancer Conservation Treatment: A Technological Review. Breast-conserving approaches aim to attain better aesthetic results in addition to local control and achieving survival rates equivalent to mastectomy in patients with breast cancer. Operations Research (OR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) disciplines have been playing major roles on the design of new intelligent systems. The BCCT.core (Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment. cosmetic results) is a software tool created for the objective evaluation of the aesthetic result of Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment (BCCT).
