Engaged scholar with transdisciplinary social-environmental sciences training, combining environmental policy and planning, political ecology and institutional and collective action approaches. His research and practice center on community-based initiatives that seek to advance transformations for environmental (and climate) justice and sustainability. His work is geographically focused in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and most recently in Portugal and Spain, though he also has experience in international comparative analyses. He is currently Assistant Researcher at the Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra (FCT-CEECIND contract), and the 2019-2021 Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague. Previously, he was Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Planning at the University of Puerto Rico- Rio Piedras (2015-2019); and Experienced Researcher (Postdoc) in the Marie Curie ITN European Network of Political Ecology – ENTITLE (2014-2015). He holds a PhD in Public Policy and Political Science from Indiana University (2012), a Masters in Environmental Policy from Cambridge University (2005), and a Bachelor in Environmental Sciences and Geography from the University of Puerto Rico (2004). He is engaged in various research-action and civil society collaborative networks on sustainability and environmental justice. He is a member of the Climate Justice Network (involving US and Global South scholars, practitioners and activists on climate justice research and education); and the Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society's (PECS) Collaborative Governance Working Group (developing cross-country comparative research to understand and strengthen collaborative ecosystem governance). He also sits on the governing board of JunteGente, a space of encounters of grassroots initiatives for a just transition in Puerto Rico; and of Emerge Puerto Rico, an initiative of community-based climate change education for youth-led adaptability and action. Finally, he is co-founding member of the editorial collective of the Undisciplined Environments political ecology blog.
