Delta Sousa e Silva. The general domain of specialization is on environmental sociology and risk issues, studying the patterns of interaction between the environment and society. The specific domain of specialization is concerned with the study of patterns natural hazards mitigation, human vulnerabilities towards risk, protective behaviours and public risk perception. Major present research interests are concerned with going further on the analysis of societal vulnerabilities towards environmental risks and natural hazards. More specifically, risk communication action-research processes, testing and assessing participatory methodologies, social vulnerability analysis and integration of risk mitigation in land-use planning. Research interests and research activities pursued in the last years have surpassed the specific domain of specialization. Given this, knowledge of patterns of interaction between environment and society has been pursued through the analysis of other empirical objects (e.g. urban risks). Besides, research experience has been achieved through the participation in projects concerned with populations facing the risk of social exclusion. These other research interests and activities have been valuable for gaining research experience, namely as far as it concerns research methodologies, public inquiry techniques, data analysis, and advanced statistical procedures.
