My scientific interests involve multiple facets of plant molecular biology with a special focus on plant environmental stress perception-response and plant nutrient regulation. My expertise encompasses several OMICs-based approaches including functional and comparative genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. I am a plant molecular physiology specialist (2008) with a PhD degree in Sciences-Biology (2013), Univ. Minho (Portugal) and Univ. Málaga (Spain). After finishing my PhD studies, I was a hired invited assistant professor at the Univ. Minho (2013-14) and taught a wide range of subjects including biochemistry, microbiology and plant molecular biology. Afterwards, to complement my research skills and potentiate my internationalization, I moved abroad as a postdoc researcher (2015-17) to the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Univ. Copenhagen (Denmark). Currently, I am a researcher in the PlantBIO group at University of Porto CIBIO-InBIO/BIOPOLIS. My research has contributed, with several impacting publications, to understand the effect and functioning of the peptide SUMO and its machinery components in the plant development, nutrient homeostasis, and in the response to a multitude of environmental stress factors. The SUMO system has been highlighted as a powerful molecular system to enhance crops resilience to climate change. In addition, I have been involved in impacting discoveries that unravel how plants sense zinc and control its homeostasis, which is a very conserved and specialized mechanism. This premise sustained a translational funded-project on tomato for zinc biofortification. Recently, I created my new independent research team to address the biotechnological potential of plants as a dietary source of iodine and to study how iodine can enhance environmental stress tolerance in plants. With my research I aim to create a true impact in human nutrition and health. Namely, within a strong collaboration with the Portuguese National Germplasm Bank (BPGV-INIAV), I have been unravelling the potential of the conserved genetic resources as solutions for modern problems associated to food security and nutrient-quality. I have been involved in national and international projects, with an extensive collaborative network. I have published 25 publications (most in tier 1 journals; i.e. Plant Physiol, Nat Plants, J Exp Bot), of which 15 are as first and/or corresponding author, which attests to my scientific independence. I lectured in multiple BSc/MSc courses, supervised 20 graduation/post-graduation students and participated as jury committee member in 6 PhD/MSc defences. I have performed >15 oral and >40 poster communications, and engaged in many popular science activities (i.e. high school visits, radio broadcast and writing for newspapers/websites). I have been an ad-hoc reviewer for 19 international journals (e.g. New Phytol, J Exp Bot, Plant Cell), with >20 contributions. I am a Reviewer Board member of Plants (MDPI), Special Issue Editor for IJERPH (MDPI), and member of the Society for Experimental Biology.
