Susana Santos received her Nutrition Science and Master in Epidemiology degrees from the University of Porto, Portugal (2012). She worked as an intern researcher at the Centre for Food Policy, City University London (2009) and as a researcher with a scientific initiation grant and subsequently an individual doctoral grant at the Institute of Public Health, University of Porto (2010-2014). From 2014 to 2022, she conducted her research at The Generation R Study Group and Department of Pediatrics in Erasmus MC-Sophia Children´s Hospital, University Medical Center Rotterdam, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She completed a Joint Doctorate between the University of Porto and Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2017 with a research project focused on the metabolic health related consequences of maternal and infant adiposity. Her line of research has been mainly focused on the role of early environmental exposures (social, lifestyle, chemical, and urban exposures) on body fat and cardiometabolic health in children. She developed a special interest in the integration of the exposome concept in this field. She worked 6 months at ISGlobal, Institute for Global Health, Barcelona, Spain (2018/19) to develop further in environmental epidemiology and exposome analyses. She has been conducting her research and also having coordinating tasks within EU H2020 funded international collaborations and consortia (Maternal Obesity and Childhood Outcomes (MOCO)-LifeCycle Project, EUCAN-Connect, ATHLETE and LongITools. She is currently working as a researcher at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), where she additionally coordinates the Generation XXI cohort – a significant population-based birth cohort in Porto, and is the Principal Investigator (PI) representing ISPUP in the ATHLETE project. Her last notable achievement was being awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Post-doctoral Fellowship, for the ongoing URBANE project, on the exposure to the urban environment during pregnancy and childhood on the risk of multimorbidity in adolescence.
