Patrícia A. T. Martins was born in 1983 in Lisbon, Portugal. Completed her PhD in Chemistry - Biological Chemistry in 2013 by Universidade de Coimbra, approved with honors and distinction after a BSc in Biochemistry in 2005 by Universidade de Lisboa. She is currently a Researcher in Universidade de Coimbra, after a 3-year period abroad at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia. “My main scientific interests have been related to the quantitative assessment of the permeation kinetics and thermodynamics of drugs across biological membranes. I have been studying the interaction of small molecules and ions with serum proteins, lipoproteins, liposomes, and lipid monolayers, using several techniques, from spectroscopic to chromatographic and calorimetric. For the latest years, I have been interested in the development of new biomimetic vectors to increase bioavailability and efficiency of small drugs and genetic material at the target tissues. A biophysical approach allows a deep understanding of the interactions at the molecular level and leads to a rational development of improved therapeutic delivery platforms.” She was awarded the Young Biophysicist Award from the Portuguese Biophysical Society in 2014 for her PhD paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Patrícia has participated in several projects, guiding students, and managing laboratory facilities and resources together with the organization of several scientific events. Currently co-supervising a PhD thesis.
