Helena Fernández López has been a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Minho (UM) since November 2019, when she was awarded the Proef/dstelecom/IB-S Chair, which is co-financed by two large Portuguese companies, Proef SGPS and dstelecom. She is currently Principal Investigator of the NETEDGE project (ANI grant > 2M €) and supervises a PhD. student and five Masters’ students. She has over 30 years of professional experience, having previously worked as Technical Director of eHealth at GRADIANT, an R&D center in Spain, for almost 8 years. In Portugal, in addition to UM, she worked in a consulting company and in two professional schools. In addition, she served in the Brazilian Navy Corps of Engineers for 16 years, working in research, project management and maintenance of electronic systems. She obtained her PhD in 2011, at the University of Minho, in the Design Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing course (EDAM-MIT Portugal Program). She holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (2005), from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a BA in Electrical Engineering (1988), from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). During her stay at GRADIANT, Helena coordinated several research projects in collaboration with the industry, funded through open calls. Of note is the European project PERSIST (Horizon 2020, ID: 875406, 5M euros), which she coordinated until she left GRADIANT. She has experience as an evaluator of research proposals for several organizations, including the European Commission, the Carlos III Health Institute, where she was a member of the Public Health Panel for three years, and the regional government of the Basque Country. Currently, her main interests are Telecommunications Networks and Artificial Intelligence.
