Beatriz Pinto de Sousa (BS, Ciência Vitae 441C-2BD0-C280) was born in Viseu, Portugal, in 2000. She graduated in Biotechnology in 2021 at the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal. During her undergraduate studies, BS participated in the Erasmus international mobility program, spending six months at the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland). This fruitful experience allowed her to acquire laboratory skills, improve her English communication, and experience different cultural and scientific environments. In 2023, BS obtained an MSc degree in Molecular Biotechnology and Bioengineering at UA. During the first year of her MSc, she engaged in a volunteer research program at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and the Department of Chemistry (UA), where she explored the surface chemistry of 2D molybdenum disulfide substrates as supporting materials for colloidal gold nanoparticles. This experience sparked her interest in nanomaterials chemistry, motivating her to pursue further research in this field and leading to her master’s thesis entitled “Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide nanostructures for the detection of biomarkers using Raman spectroscopy”. This research enabled her to deepen her knowledge of 2D nanomaterial synthesis and gain hands-on experience with several characterization techniques, including electron microscopy, confocal Raman microscopy, and vibrational spectroscopy. During her MSc studies, BS presented her work in poster communications, with two posters as first author, at three national conferences. In August 2023, she started working as a research fellow under CICECO’s Strategic Project (UIDB/50011/2020) in the Department of Chemistry at UA. Her research focused on 2D nanomaterials based on transition metal disulfides (TMDs) obtained through sustainable liquid-phase exfoliation methods and their application in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This work culminated in the publication of the paper entitled “Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Using 2D Materials”, with BS as first author, selected for publication as a Concept article in Chemistry – A European Journal. Additionally, her research was presented in two poster communications at international conferences (IBER 2023, Coimbra; 9th Confocal Raman Imaging Symposium, Ulm, Germany) and in one oral communication at the 1st LUCES Training School in Kaiserslautern, Germany, entitled “2D materials functionalized with fluorescent macrocycles as sensing platforms for biological applications”. During her research fellowship, BS also attended a non-degree course entitled “Advanced Course in Scientific Investigation” at UA. This research culminated in the publication of her second first-author paper, “One-step synthesis of few-layer MoS2/Au nanostructures mediated by colloidal gold exfoliation with potential for surface-enhanced Raman scattering applications”, published as a full-length article in Applied Surface Science. By the end of 2024, BS was awarded a PhD grant (2024.02680.BD) to develop a doctoral thesis entitled “Waste valorisation of solid lubricants: from transition metal disulfides to optical biosensors”. In March 2024, she visited the University of Texas at Austin (USA) as a research affiliate under a J-1 visa for a two-month period, collaborating with a research group within the UT Austin–Portugal Program fellowship. This research aimed to explore the use of 2D material inks as biosensing platforms using Raman spectroscopy and conductivity-based methods. Previously, BS presented her work in a poster communication at the NanoSeries Conference and published two additional papers entitled “2D materials-based hybrid films for rhodamine B removal and SERS detection” and “Eco-Friendly and Efficient Fabrication of Few-Layer Molybdenum Disulfide/Gold Nanocomposites by Chitosan-Assisted Exfoliation for SERS Applications”, published in FlatChem and ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, as first and second author, respectively.
