Ana Sofia Santo Tourais

Ana Tourais (Ana Sofia Santo Tourais) is a Ph.D. fellow in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, in the Department of Conservation and Restoration at FCT-NOVA (Portugal). Ana completed her Bachelor's (2017) and her Master's (2020) degrees, at the same institution, specializing in conservation and restoration of graphic documents as a fellow of the Cistercian Horizons Research Project. She was awarded, two times, highest-scoring student in conservation, after her two degrees. Before pursuing her Ph.D., Ana worked as a book and paper conservator at the Rita Udina Studio (Barcelona), at the Redbone Bindery (Gröningen) and at the NEON Art Conservation (Lisbon). She took these opportunities to develop her professional skills, gaining valuable bench and team work experience, as well as learning about business management in conservation. In 2021, Ana won an FCT doctoral grant and began her Ph.D., dedicated to the study of medieval book bindings from the Monastery of Alcobaça. Her research interests focus on the codicological and material characterisation of medieval bookbindings, as well as their conservation, but she is broadly curious and attentive to the field of book and paper conservation. In the scope of her research, Ana published papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented several papers at international conferences. She is a dedicated and active professional. As such, she participated in the organisation of several international conferences in the field; notably, she was one of the three coordinators of the 6th IIC/NOVA-Student & Emerging Conservators Conference (2021). Ana is also a member of leading organisations in the conservation field like IADA, IIC and ICOMOS-Portugal.
