Maria Mota completed her BSc in Biology and an MSc in Immunology from the University of Porto, her PhD in Parasitology at the University College London/NIMR and a post-doc at NYU. Since 2002 Maria Mota has been a group leader, first at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and then at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM). As an independent researcher Maria Mota focused on studying both the liver and the blood stages of infection by the Plasmodium parasite. Her team¿s overall goal has been towards the elucidation of the most fundamental and conceptually innovative questions of Host-Plasmodium interactions leading to groundbreaking discoveries. By showing that Plasmodium activates a type I IFN response in the liver (Nature Medicine, 2014) the Mota Lab has challenged the widespread assumption that Plasmodium can infect and replicate inside hepatocytes undetected. Her work also demonstrates that active interactions with the host cellular machinery are required during Plasmodium liver stage to prevent clearance. Examples are two proteins that operate on ensuring parasite survival by blocking infected cells autophagy (Nature Microbiology, 2018) and through interaction with host cell actin to elute host cytosolic defenses (iScience, 2022). With recent work the team further enriched our understanding on liver stage infection by providing a comprehensive single-cell gene profiling of hepatocytes and parasites in infected livers over time (Nature, 2022). Furthermore, Maria Mota’s team revealed that nutrient availability and dietary habits strongly impact the establishment and course of a malaria infection by interfering with both host and parasite pathways during different stages of infection (Nature, 2017; Nature Microbiology, 2017; Communications Biology, 2023). Recent data from the Mota Lab reveals the intricate nature of Host-Plasmodium interactions by showing that the liver stage and the blood stage interact towards pathology and disease severity (Immunity, 2023). Moreover, Maria Mota´s team identified a third party determining disease: host microbiota (Nature Communications, 2022). In 2012 Maria Mota received a 5-year Starting/Consoliadtor Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), as well as a 3-year Excellence Grant from FCT. In 2018, Maria Mota was awarded a laCaixa Foundation Health Research Grant. Recently, in 2023, the innovative nature of her research lead to the successful securing of new funding from the ERC with a 5-year Advanced Grant, and from the laCaixa Foundation with another 3-year Health Research Grant. At the institutional level, Maria Mota lead the successful securing of EU-funded projects such as TwinnToInfect (H2020-TWINN-2015) and EXCELLtoINNOV (H2020- Establishing ERA Chairs) to provide IMM with the needed means to achieve international excellence in the immunity and infection area and iMM-CARE (HORIZON-WIDERA-2022- Teaming for Excellence) towards establishing a new centre of excellence for clinical and translational research. Maria Mota has published more than 140 papers cited more than 7000 times (h-index = 49). She has supervised 15 PhD students (concluded) and more than 18 post-doctoral fellows (current and concluded). Her scientific merit was recognized internationally and won several prizes and awards such as: EMBO member by the European Molecular Biology Organization in 2016 and in 2018 the Sanofi Institut Pasteur Mid-Career Award. Nationally, in 2017 Maria Mota was awarded the Pfizer Prize in Basic Research and in 2013 she was awarded the Pessoa Award, a prestigious national award. Since April 2014 Maria Mota is the Executive Director of iMM. Under her leadership, iMM has significantly enriched its critical mass and became a dynamic structure based on a vibrant faculty with an outstanding research portfolio. iMM is now merging with IGC. A new Foundation has been created – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) and Maria Mota was recently elected the President and CEO of GIMM.
