Thomas Panagopoulos (Dr) is a Professor of landscape architecture, had MSc in renewable natural resources and PhD in forestry and natural environment. He is currently a member of the Research Centre for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being, has been department head of landscape architecture and masters degree director at the University of Algarve, Portugal. He has acted as principal investigator in a total of approved funding of over 8 million euros. This is a result of his research strategy that crosses many disciplinary boundaries to create a holistic transdisciplinary approach to science, and his multi-cultured background in fostering research at the international level. Besides, he has vast experience in working on many European and private projects. Currently is coordinating the projects: BIODES ¿Improving life in a changing urban environment through biophilic design¿; RESTORE: Rethinking sustainability towards a regenerative economy; TrailGazerBid Enhancing natural and cultural assets to stimulate economic development. He has also served many cities to develop their sustainability plan. From 2011 to 2017 was at the executive board of the UNISCAPE (the Network of Universities for the implementation of the European Landscape Convention). Published 120 articles in indexed journals. and 46 book chapters and 20 books. Supervised 5 Ph.D. Thesis and 14 Master Thesis. Acted as principal investigator in 11 projects and had participated as a researcher in more than a dozen. In his professional activities interacted with 280 coauthors in scientific work.

Creating liveable cities is a policy priority, especially for cities that are experiencing population loss. A decline in the number of inhabitants is commonly associated with low levels of residential satisfaction. However, such a supposition does not often find empirical support in shrinking cities. Soil erosion vulnerability under scenarios of climate land-use changes after the development of a large reservoir in a semi-arid area. Climate and land-use/cover changes (LUCC) influence soil erosion vulnerability in the semi-arid region of Alqueva, threatening the reservoir storage capacity and sustainability of the landscape. Considering the effect of these changes in the future, the purpose of this study was to investigate soil erosion scenarios using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. The attractiveness of cities as places to live determines population movements into or out of them. Cities facing a continued and prolonged process of population decline require innovative urban regeneration policies complementary to growth-oriented policies. Historical trajectories of currently shrinking Portuguese cities: A typology of urban shrinkage.
