Ana Matos is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher (Post-doctoral fellowship) at Prof. Helena Florindo's lab (BioNanoSciences - Drug Delivery & Immunoengineering) at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. Ana Matos concluded her PhD degree in 2020 in Biomedical Engineering awarded by the Instituto Superior Técnico. During her PhD studies she developed a multifunctional colorectal cancer (CRC) immunotherapy based on a multivalent nanoplatform rationally designed to deliver combinations of neoantigens and immune regulators to modulate host immunity in combination with modulators of the CRC immunosuppressive tumor-immune microenvironment. Her PhD project resulted in 1 oral and 8 poster presentations, 1 publication as 1st author (1 additional under review in a top journal), and 1 BSc project co-supervised by Ana. Since 2020, she has a core function in the LaCaixa-funded international consortium (NanoPanther, LCF/PR/HR19/52160021, 1M) entitled NanoPanther - Sensitizing pancreatic cancer to immunotherapy with multimodal precision nanomedicines. The nanotechnology, immunotherapy and oncology research fields have boosted her research focused on the rational design of functionalized nanobiomaterials as novel cancer immunotherapeutics. These nano-immunotherapies are designed to carry different active biomolecules and to target distinct cell populations, such as dendritic cells (DC) and immune, tumor or stromal cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME), to overcome multiple tumor immunosuppressive features, and thereby control metastasis and disease recurrence. It includes the evaluation of the effect of these novel nanomedicines on DC maturation and T-cell activation and proliferation, the characterization of their biodistribution profiles and the evaluation of their in vivo therapeutic efficacy concerning their impact on the modulation of immune-based escape/invasion mechanisms and the induction of efficient antigen-specific anti-tumor immune responses. Her major topics of research are: 1) DC targeting using nanotechnology-based tools to deliver a combination of (i) tumor-associated antigens, able to induce antigen-specific anti-tumor adaptive immune responses, (ii) adjuvants for the specific DC targeting and maturation in vivo, and (iii) gene regulators to modulate signaling pathways related to tumor evasion mechanisms; 2) Size-based targeting of peripheral and lymph node-resident immune cells by nanoparticles (NP) to overcome major barriers for vaccine components and immunotherapies; 3) Combinational strategies to modulate tumor stromal and immune cell interplay based on the design of multi-targeting nano-immunotherapeutics against metastatic cancers. Ana Matos has been actively involved in the lab management and in the training of national and international master and graduated students, with a background in Nanotechnology, Immunology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Polymer Sciences, Cancer Biology and Chemical Biology. She has also participated in the scientific writing of scientific projects submitted for international funding and in several collaborative works that resulted in review and original manuscripts published in high-impact factor peer-reviewed journals (ORCID: 0000-0002-7325-6328), such as Nature Nanotechnology, Biomaterials, Materials Horizons and Angewandte Chemie. Ana interacted with more than 40 authors (+7 nationalities), publishing in total 18 articles and 4 conference proceedings with a cumulative impact factor of 157 and a total of 574 citations. Ana presented her work at several national/international meetings (4 oral communications and 12 posters). She was supported with 4 travel grants and 4 registration awards from renowned scientific societies to participate in highly recognized international meetings, including EACR, CIMT and TTP Labtech. Ana had been part of the team of 5 FCT-funded projects, and 4 international consortiums.
