Estela Vicente graduated (2011) and completed a MSc (2013) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Aveiro (UA). Her MSc thesis focused on the characterisation of emissions from residential wood combustion and mitigation measures and was developed within the LIFE project AIRUSE. After completing her MSc, she joined the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (UA) as a research fellow for the European research project mentioned above. In 2017, she was awarded a PhD grant fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In 2021, she concluded her PhD in Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Aveiro (approved with distinction and merit, consensually), with a thesis entitled 'Chemical characteristics and toxicity of particles from residential biomass combustion'. In her doctoral research, she conducted a thorough investigation of the chemical and toxicological characteristics of gaseous and particulate emissions from conventional and emerging biofuels used in different residential appliances. Her study included laboratory combustion tests, as well as the evaluation of the effects of these emissions on both indoor and outdoor air quality, as well as human exposure. Concomitantly with her PhD work, she carried out research focused on the characterisation of PM in urban environments within the project SOPRO and planned and executed indoor air quality sampling campaigns. The research resulted in new chemical and toxicological profiles for significant urban sources such as road dust resuspension and significant residential sources such as heating, cooking, ironing, and vacuuming. During her PhD, she conducted a 2.5-month research training at the Centre for Natural Sciences, University of Pannonia (Veszprém, Hungary) focusing on ecotoxicity. She also worked with different research groups at the Department of Biology (UA), where she implemented methodologies to assess PM cytotoxicity. To model personal dose, she collaborated with Prof. Mihalis Lazaridis from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete (Greece). Additionally, she completed an internship in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of León, Spain, to gain hands-on experience with aerosol measurement instrumentation, data processing, and statistical tools. She also worked closely with the Health & Technology Research Center in Lisbon to characterize fungal contamination and evaluate total bacteria in residential dust samples. In May 2021, she joined the research group of Atmospheric Environment at the University of Léon (Spain) as a researcher for a project that aimed to assess the impact of coal combustion on air quality. Her main responsibility was to conduct an extensive sampling campaign in the city center and to characterize emissions from residential coal combustion. During her tenure at the Atmospheric Environment research group, she was awarded five ERASMUS+ grants from the European Mobility Program for staff formation. Additionally, she co-supervised two BSc students and was a jury member for one MSc thesis. She was also involved in the organization of two workshops for science diffusion within the 'Expociencia Unileón' and was Guest Editor of two special issues. Recently (2022), her application to the 5th edition of the Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus has been granted by FCT. Despite having a relatively short research career, she published 46 indexed articles. Currently, she is serving as a Guest Editor for one special issue (Atmosphere, MDPI) and, since April 2021, she has been Associate Editor of Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health (Springer). Additionally, she is the co-supervisor of 1 MSc and 1 PhD student at the Department of Environment and Planning (UA). She also served as an expert evaluator of 3 international calls (Poland, Spain, and Ireland).
