Estela Alexandra Domingos Vicente

Estela Vicente graduated (2011) and completed a MSc (2013) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Aveiro. Her MSc thesis focused on the characterisation of emissions from residential wood combustion and mitigation measures and was developed within the LIFE project AIRUSE (Testing and Development of Air Quality Mitigation Measures in Southern Europe). After the completion of her MSc, she enrolled herself at the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) Research Group at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM, University of Aveiro), as a research fellow of the European research project mentioned above. The AIRUSE project was awarded with the 'Best of the Best' LIFE-Environment Project Award. In 2017, she got a PhD grant fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her PhD thesis ("Chemical characteristics and toxicity of particles from residential biomass combustion") aimed at characterising the emissions from modern residential combustion appliances fuelled with different types of pellets and evaluating the indoor exposure to pollutants arising from the operation of traditional combustion appliances. During her PhD, she has been actively involved in multidisciplinary collaborations, which allowed her to to develop her communication and management skills, and to foster effective partnerships with others. She made a secondment on ecotoxicity at the Centre for Natural Sciences, University of Pannonia (Veszprém, Hungary) and she also worked with different research groups at the Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, where she carried out cytotoxicity and mutagenicity assays. To model personal exposure and dose, she collaborated with the Department of Environmental Engineering in the Technical University of Crete. In addition, she made an internship at the Department of Chemistry and Physics, University of León, to gain practise with instrumentation for aerosol measurements and with data processing tools. She published an invited review article, which was one of the most cited of the journal Atmospheric Research in 2021. In March 2021, she got her PhD degree in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from the University of Aveiro with distinction and merit. Soon after, she got a position as researcher at the Group of Atmospheric Environment, University of León, Spain, in the project "Contaminación atmosférica por carbono negro procedente de la combustión de carbón: uso del etalómetro para estimar su contribución y cuantificar el lavado por la lluvia". Currently she is Associate Editor of Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health, from Springer and Guest Editor of two special issues in ISI scientific journals (Energies and Atmosphere, both MDPI). She has worked as a regular reviewer for different other journals. So far, she has already participated in 2 national and 1 international research projects as team member and collaborated in 7 more international/national projects. She contributed to the elaboration of the reports and technical guide of the AIRUSE project. She has (co)authored 2 books and published 39 indexed articles (661 citations and h-index of 15). She has contributions in scientific national and international conferences (9 orals and 52 posters). She belonged to the organizing committee of an international conference. She has served as an expert evaluator of 3 international calls (research projects in Poland and Spain). She is currently the co-supervisor of 2 BSc Students at the University of León. She was jury member of 1 MSc thesis.
