Ana Catarina Queiroga, completed her PhD in Biology in 2012 by Universidade de Lisboa Instituto Superior de Agronomia and BSc in Microbiology in 2003 by Universidade Católica Portuguesa Escola Superior de Biotecnologia. Her unconventional curricular path took her from teaching classes on water quality in a Water Safety professional course to the pedagogic coordination of that professional school (10-12th grade), and eventually to a year-long position as Senior Research Officer in the Royal Life Saving Society Australia, one of the leading drowning prevention advocacy organizations worldwide. Back in Portugal she spent a few years as Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona do Porto, and highly engaged in the foundation of the International Drowning Researchers Alliance (www.idra.world), an NGO aimed at promoting evidence-based drowning prevention and outcomes mitigation. While employed as a professor and pedagogic coordinator, she focused her scientific collaboration in several drowning prevention research projects, collaborating with researchers from leading institutions in the field. In 2015 she worked for 2 months in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) with SOBRASA, the Brazilian Lifesaving Society, promoting drowning prevention among the community (mainly providing courses to surfers and swimming referees in preparation for the 2016 olympics). She is member of the ILS's Drowning Prevention Commission since 2012, and of the ILS's Medical Committee since 2019. Only in 2017, 5 years after completed her PhD, she started working as a postdoctoral researcher (role of Assistant Researcher) at EPIUnit - Universidade do Porto Unidade de Investigação em Epidemiologia. She has a special interest in drowning and aquatic injuries epidemiology, risk perception, risk exposure and prevention. She is also engaged in promoting water safety in developing countries as well as within non-native and high-risk communities in developed countries. She teaches water safety courses to swimming instructors in Portugal and Africa. She has participated in the organization of several scientific meetings, including major international conferences, regularly serves in conference scientific committees and as reviewer in peer-reviewed journals, and acted as jury in several PhD defences related to the topic. She has co-authored 32 original articles in peer-reviewed journals, 12 as first author and 8 as senior author. She has also co-authored 8 comments or letters to editor, 4 book chapters, 4 technical reports and 4 policies/guidelines. Her publication record has over 379 citations, an h-index of 12, and more than half of all publications were published in Q1 journals and are in the topic of this application. In her professional activities has co-authored scientific papers with 142 collaborators and has been invited to provide 20 oral presentations of the 56 presented. She has supervised 1 MSc student and is currently supervising 3 PhD students and 2 medical doctors (Public Health specialty). She is actively engaged in community intervention activities such as "World Restart a Heart Day", "Universidade Júnior", "Cientificamente Provável" and "Semana da Água", and serving as a volunteer at Surfrider Foundation Europe - chapter Porto.
