Dr. Roberto Martins is an Assistant Researcher (CEEC Junior) from CESAM & Department of Biology, University of Aveiro. He has a degree in Teaching of Biology and Geology (ECTS grade: A; best 2007 student prize) and Ph.D. in Biology (2013). Since 2019, he has been Visiting Professor at the State University of São Paulo (UNESP-IB; São Vicente, SP, Brazil) and the University of São Paulo (USP-IO; São Paulo, Brazil) amongst the best ranked Latin American universities and lecturer of advanced courses and some practical classes at UAVR. He received 3 awards. In 2014, moved from ecology to marine ecotoxicology thanks to a FCT Post-Doctoral grant, and in 2019 started a position as an Assistant Researcher (research grant awarded by FCT in 1st CEEC call, in the Junior category: CEECIND/01329/2017). Over the last 5 years, main research interests have been related to the assessment of efficacy and ecotoxicity of innovative nanomaterials to control key societal problems (e.g. corrosion, fouling, and more recently eutrophication, fungal diseases) and the development of nano-specific guidelines to fulfill regulatory needs. He is (co-)author of 32 (+2 accepted) ISI papers (h-index=12; >50% with at least one international partner), 17 published in the last 5 years (1/3 in top 3% journals) plus 1 book chapter, and presented >75 communications (14 as an invited lecturer). In the last 5 years supervises/d a total of 3 postdocs, 2 Ph.D., 10 MSc (3 ongoing co-supervisions in Brazil; 6 concluded), and 8 BSc students, 3 Ph.D/MSc external internships, and 2 research fellows. Currently, coordinates 1 transnational project and 1 research grant, participates in 8 projects (5 international: 3 H2020 and 2 FAPESP; 3 national: 2 FCT and 1 P2020), and offers also a large set of integrated services on ecotoxicity and efficacy of coatings. He coordinated 2 other projects and participated in 8 other projects (2 EU) or service supplies in the last 5 years. He reviewed grants for the Chilean FONDECYT foundation and he is guest editor of a SI dedicated to Green Nanotechnology. He was a member of 10 academic committees. He is a member of the Global SETAC Nano Interest Group (devoted to discussing nano-related problems) and the "Malta Initiative" group which join European researchers and stakeholders aimed at developing OECD guidelines for nanomaterials assessment. He has been involved in several outreach activities aimed at promoting public awareness and student engagement, through lectures, workshops, school visits, and science fairs.
