I am a postdoctoral researcher associated with the Centre for Ecology and Conservation (University of Exeter). My research focuses on understanding human-wildlife interactions within complex socio-ecological systems, from both wildlife and human perspectives. During the past eight years I have worked in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. I am co-director of the Cantanhez Chimpanzee Project, a multi-institutional network of researchers and conservation practitioners working on chimpanzee ecology, health and conservation in Guinea-Bissau. I was recently Research Fellow for the Darwin Initiative Project 026-18, co-managing a project focussed on biomonitoring and One Health in Cantanhez National Park, an anthropogenic, agro-forest coastal landscape in southern Guinea-Bissau. I have published 13 articles in scientific journals and 3 book chapters, and contributed to IUCN Red List assessments and species conservation action plans. In collaboration with the Institute for Biodiversity and Protected Areas (IBAP), Dr Kimberley Hockings (University of Exeter) and local communities, I have recently developed a mammal conservation action plan (2023-2033) for Cantanhez National Park, Guinea-Bissau. This action plan outlines eight conservation strategies, including habitat protection and restoration, One Health, management of human-wildlife and conservation conflicts, with strong emphasis on improving multi-stakeholder collaboration and promote national and local expertise.

Scientific expedition

Activity description Institution / Organization
2022/10/19 - 2022/12/12 Exploratory scientific expedition across southern Guinea-Bissau, across Catió, Cacine and Empada Sectors, to measure human-primate interactions using semi-structured group interviews. Organised expedition and led interviews. This work is part of Chloe Chesney PhD's project on local ecological knowledge in and out of National Parks. Cantanhez Chimpanzee Project, United Kingdom

2019/10 - 2022/06/30 I established and oversaw a biodiversity monitoring programme in Cantanhez National Park (CNP, Guinea-Bissau) with project partner IBAP. I co-developed and implemented One Health knowledge-sharing activities with local communities. I supervised four Guinean early career researchers in running project activities. Worked with NGO NADEL and CRIA to collect and analyse social anthropology data (interviews, focus groups). Established participatory mapping across ten villages in central CNP. University of Exeter, United Kingdom
2022/04/01 - 2022/05/10 Designed and implemented a whole-park inventory in Cantanhez National Park (CNP), Guinea-Bissau. I designed the research, trained, and supervised a team of 23 people including seven IBAP park managers (from Protected Areas across the country) and three government officials (Ministry of Environment and Forestry Department), and successfully implemented the first park-wide mammal inventory in CNP. I trained IBAP technicians in data analysis and produced the Action Plan for the Conservation of medium- and large-sized mammals in CNP.
2017 - 2018 12-month intensive monitoring of one chimpanzee community in Cantanhez National Park using camera traps to investigate chimpanzee spatiotemporal landscape use in relation to food availability and indices of anthropogenic risk. Bayesian spatiotemporal modelling using INLA-SPDE approach. This work was included in my PhD and a published article in Scientific Reports
2016 - 2017 Zooming in on human-wildlife coexistence: primate community response in a shared agroforest landscape in Guinea-Bissau. Used camera traps to investigate chimpanzee and other primates’ spatiotemporal habitat use in a human-dominated agro-forest landscape (Cantanhez National Park). Measured vegetation structure and composition, monitored phenology. Carried out interviews to understand perceptions and knowledge of chimpanzee behaviour. Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom
2015/09/01 - 2015/12/15 Project: Chimpanzee tool use in Guinea-Bissau and behavioural complexity. Funded by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, EXPL/IVC-ANT/0997/2013). Two months of scientific expedition in Guinea-Bissau, including in Cantanhez and Dulombi National Parks, to search for evidence of tool use by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Assisted in research planning, contributed to data collection and team management. Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia, Portugal
2013 - 2013 Spatiotemporal distribution and habitat use of nocturnal primates in Angola. Investigated nocturnal primate occurrence across north-western Angola. Four sites in Angola surveyed using reconnaissance walks at night. Identified and described a new species (Galagoides kumbirensis). Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom
2012/05/01 - 2012/07/31 Estimating the density of red langurs (Presbytis rubicunda) in Sungai Wain, Indonesia. Led a team of six to complete a distance sampling on line transect survey within a dipterocarp rainforest in Borneo. Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom
