Ana M. Ferreira completed her MSc in Chemical Engineering in 2013 and earned her PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Aveiro in 2018, supported by a PhD fellowship from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). During her doctoral studies, she gained scientific experience through internships at Universidade Estadual Paulista, Brazil, and Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. After her PhD, Ferreira worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. There, she focused on purifying compounds from microalgae in collaboration with the company Oceanbasis, supported by a TUM University Foundation Fellowship. Returning to CICECO in 2019, she continued her research at the University of Aveiro (CICECO), exploring the chiral resolution of drugs using enantioselective aqueous biphasic systems. In 2022, seeking more knowledge in alternative solvents for compound extraction and international collaborations, she moved to Kanazawa University, Japan, as a post-doctoral researcher funded by a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship. Here, she focused on using alternative solvents, especially zwitterionic compounds, to improve the solubility of bioactive compounds in water. In 2023, Ferreira returned to the University of Aveiro (CICECO) as a Junior Researcher. She started a new research line, investigating the use of alternative solvents for recycling plastic waste in the project REPLAstYc "Rethinking plastic waste recycling: Enhancing the depolymerization process by additives removal using alternative solvents." Over the past years, she has developed extensive expertise in creating sustainable platforms for extracting compounds from various sources, using both Solid-Liquid Extraction (SLE) and Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), with the aim of improving societal standards.
