Graduated in Textile Engineering (1991), MsC in Design and Marketing (1996) and PhD in Textile Engineering – Clothing Technology (2003). Since 1993 develops research at 2C2T - Center of Science and Textile Technology of University of Minho teaching in several disciplines in the textile and clothing area to the courses of Textile and Production Engineering, Clothing Engineering, Textile Chemistry, Fashion Design and Marketing and others. Is Expert of European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing from E.U. in the Thematic Expert Group 1 - Novel Special Fibres and Fibre Composites for Innovative Textile Products. As result of several international consultancy and training projects possesses a considerable experience in the areas of work study (licensed as user and instructor by the Predetermined Motion Time System - General Sewing Data - UK), production planning, organization and control, implementation and management of quality systems (ISO 9001). Involved in the supervision of several research projects in the areas of sewing dynamics, clothing design, textile design, pattern design, anthropometrics, ergonomics and development of functional/multi-functional materials and textile products and interactive textiles (electronic textiles) with applications in the health, automobile, sport and other sectors. Born in a third generation of a family with textile production facilities, living all is youth inside the daily management of the business, performing all kind of tasks during holidays and free time. In the last years has been focusing research in inclusive design, namely mobility and visual impairment, Down’s Syndrome, bedridden people and seniors, and in the development of solutions for pressure ulcers prevention, being awarded with the START 2008 Entrepreneur Prize with a garments collection adapted to people with mobility impairment, namely those moving in wheelchairs; SpinUM 2009 Prize; Semi-finalist winner in Lisbon during the Eurecan - European Venture Contest 2009, being classified within the Europe Top100 and nominated for Portuguese North Inclusive Prize - Novo Norte 09/10. Founder and Head of R&D of the Spin-off enterprise from University of Minho, Weadapt - Inclusive Design and Engineering Solutions since November 2008, involved in the UTEN - University Technology Enterprise Network with University of Texas and IC2Institute at Austin (USA). Winner in the ISCTE-IUL MIT Portugal Venture competition 2010 in the category Products and Services with Weadapt. Has participated in COHiTEC program 2010 with the project Sense4me - Monitoring and control system of discomfort in disability, bed rest people and surgical patients. Internship with University of Texas (Austin) en 2011 for technology transfer and Visiting Professor at MIT (Cambridge) invited by Elazer R. Edelman from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology, incorporating WeadaptUS Inc to operate in the US market as a spin out from U Minho, Harvard and MIT. Member of the juri of the Bezgraniz Couture International Fashion and Accessoire Award since first edition, to promote the inclusive design around the world. In 2017 obtained a Professional Certification as Consultant in Design Thinking by the University of Salamanca (Spain). In 2017 was Visiting Professor at Cornell University (Ithaca-USA) invited by Susan Ashdown from the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design. Holds 7 international patents and two brands. Has successfully supervised several students at Master and PhD level. Has been involved in the supervision and also as researcher in several R&D projects with a strong connection with industry, maintaining a regular yearly scientific number of relevant publications in journals and in the main International Conferences, like AHFE, Ergonomics, Fiber Society, Autex and Textile Institute.
