Manuel Melle-Franco has a degree in Physical-Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and an M.Sc. In Materials Chemistry and a PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of Kent (UK). Later, he worked as a researcher in the group of Francesco Zerbetto at the University of Bologna (Italy), at the University of Porto and at the University of Minho (Portugal).  He currently works at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, at the University of Aveiro leading a group focusing on computer modelling of carbon-based nanomaterials, molecules and organic frameworks. Manuel has more than 130 peer reviewed publications, many in high visibility journals such as Nature, Chem, Nature Nanotechnology, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, Nature Communications ACS Nano, Nano Letters, BioMaterials, Small, etc. In addition, several pieces highlighting his work have also appeared in general media, such as national radio and local newspapers, and in specialized media like Nature Reviews Chemistry, Chemistry World, Physics World, SynFacts, Chemistry Views and Computational Chemistry Highlights. In the last five years, Manuel has been awarded more than 1.5M euros of direct funding, including four European projects in emerging technologies funded within the FET-OPEN (x2), Pathfinder(x1) and M.ERA.NET (x1) programs as well as seven national FCT projects in areas ranging from bioelectronics and nanotechnology to quantum materials. In addition, Manuel and his group have also been awarded several projects and grants in national and international high-performance computing facilities totalling over 1.8 M core hours.  Also, he is one of the proponents and Portuguese representative on the management committee of the NanoSpace European COST action (CA21126) joining together nanoscientists and astronomers.
