José António de Almeida is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Earth Sciences Department of NOVA-FCT, and he is nowadays the local Coordinator of the 3G Group at the GeoBioTec.NOVA Research Centre. He holds a degree in Mining Engineering (1989), a master’s in Mineral Processing and Mine Planning (1992), and a PhD in Mining Engineering with specialization in oil reservoir characterization (1997). His professional journey began at the Technical University of Lisbon, where he actively engaged in various research projects and collaborated on contracts with companies, focusing on characterization of oil fields, the temporal and spatial evaluation of contaminants in soils, and the assessment of mining reserves. In 2001, he joined NOVA-FCT as an Assistant Professor. With over 35 years of experience in research and teaching, his expertise lies in Geological Modelling, Characterization of Mineral Resources, and Mining Exploitation. In summary of the NOVA-FCT career, he successfully supervised or co-supervised 5 doctoral students and more than 50 master's dissertations, collaborated on 48 technical project reports, published 54 articles indexed in Scopus (h=8), taught 11 different curricular units (courses), and participated in the establishment of master’s and Ph.D. programs in Geological Engineering. Also, he held positions as Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences (2019-2022), Coordinator of the CICEGe Research Center (2013-2015) and local coordinator of the NOVA GeoBioTec Pole (2015-2019, Very Good). Much of his recent research has focused on the stochastic simulation of earth science variables and the calibration of spectra from LIBS equipment. Moreover, he has been deeply involved in collaboration and consulting with companies, particularly over the past decade, covering a wide range of activities such as Environmental Assessment Studies, Evaluation of Mineral Deposit Reserves, and geotechnical assessments related to construction and land stabilization.
