João José Simões Sousa obtained his Master’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Coimbra, and joined the technical staff of a major Portuguese pharmaceutical company. Meanwhile, he became involved with the incipient regulatory field back in 1984. In 1987, he started his academic career at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. After completing his PhD (1996), he started his collaboration with the Infarmed (Portuguese Regulatory Agency) and, since then he has been involved with the different regulatory areas, in particular as Quality Expert for submitted dossiers Centralized Procedures, National, MRP, DCP, Variations, and Renewals). He is now dealing with Scientific Advices. Based on his experience, he proposed the inclusion of the subject “Regulatory Affairs” in the academic curriculum of the Masters Degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy, being responsible for that subject. Meanwhile, he developed his research career, focusing mainly in sustained release dosage forms and transdermal devices. He is currently Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Coimbra and member of Directive Board of UCNext. Authored more than one hundred papers in peer review journals, 8 book chapters, and two books. Presented several oral communications and invited lectures both nationally and abroad. He supervised around 20 Ph.D. dissertations and several Master thesis. He has been invited as an examiner of Ph.D. thesis in national and international universities. The last developments in his scientific career are focused on new pharmaceutical approaches to the treatment of cancer, in particular glioblastoma. The knowledge gained while as a quality expert helps the rational development of medicines from bench to commercial products.
