Ana Raquel Coelho graduated in Clinical Physiology at Coimbra Health School in 2012. During the curricular internship year, she worked at Coimbra University Hospital and 3 months at Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic (Rome). Afterwards, she obtained her MSc degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from University of Coimbra, and, in 2020, she completed her PhD in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine at the same University, under a FCT PhD individual fellowship. Her PhD project was developed at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where she spent 3 years, and in the Center of Neuroscience and Cell Biology in Coimbra, under supervision of Prof. Jiri Neuzil and Dr. Paulo Oliveira. During master, she developed a project focused on the molecular and cellular protective mechanisms of Sirtuin 3 against the toxicity induced by the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin in cardiomyocytes. During PhD, Ana Raquel Coelho has made significant contributions to the understanding of the importance of mitochondrial metabolism in cancer. She provided evidence of mitochondrial trafficking between mammalian cells in vivo, and consequently, the essential role of mitochondrial respiration for tumor initiation and progression. In 2018, supported by a FLAD Healthcare 2020 project, she collaborated with Prof. Pinchas Cohen, spending 3 months in his laboratory in the University of Southern California, LA, USA. The scientific objective was to identify the role of the mtDNA-encoded peptide MOTS-c as a critical mediator of the beneficial effects of physical activity in skeletal muscle. She has also been collaborating in a project focus on the development of mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants, both from natural and semi-synthetic origin, as a therapeutic approach for aging-associated diseases. In 2021, she joined Gonçalo Bernardes' Lab, at IMM, emerging in the field of chemical bioconjugation and chemical biology. After working in several projects related with SARS-CoV-2, she is currently working on targeted-anti-cancer therapies, by developing and testing miniprotein-drug conjugates. Briefly, she has published 1 book chapter and 12 publication in peer-reviewed international journals (10 at Q1, and 2 Top-5% journals), 4 as first author, mostly in the field of cancer biology. Overall, she has a total of approximately 500 citations and a 9 h-index. Ana Raquel Coelho participated in 7 international events and was on the organizing committee of 3 scientific meetings. She enthusiastically promotes knowledge transfer by teaching and mentoring students, lecturing on cancer metabolism classes in MSc and PhD degrees at the University of Coimbra and participating in outreach science activities for society.
