My career goal is to pursuit a soil science PhD and to gain advanced knowledge and practical understanding in terms of Research and Extension. My program research will enable me to develop the knowledge needed to enhance environmental and soil management practices in the viticultural context, and develop technical improvements in the sustainability of the wine making process. I have completed my master degree in Environmental Engineer in 2010 at the The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and shortly after I had the opportunity to attend an internship in San Tomé, e Principe through the Inov contact program in solid waste management. This six month experience helped a lot in consolidation my understanding about the environmental and regional development skills , especially in water supply and sanitation in developing countries and solid waste. Thus, it inculcated in me problem solving and analytical abilities. Afterwards, I have worked for a Portuguese environmental management company auditing management systems for one year. Unfortunately, at that time the company was dealing with hard financial problems, and my contract wasn´t renewed. Thereafter I faced a long-term unemploymentAfter all the setbacks, I decided to change the field of my carrear and pursue my great passion, the world of wine. In 2015 I had the chance to find a harvest job in Fita Preta wines. It was absolutely fantastisc! As I have found myself thought the wine experience. This winery brought together my two worlds: The environment and wine. Fita Preta was established in my own holistic philosophy; climate, terroir and wine. This experience, changed my life forever; once I have entered the world of wine I was sure I could never get out of it. Hence, I took an enology graduate degree in Evora University and I tried to continue my studies through a PhD. In this context, I applied for the FCT scolarship but I didn´t succeed. Alongside with financial difficulties I was forced to interrupt my PhD and search for a livelihood. During my journey of active job search, I was invited for a job opportunity in a famous wine cellar- Julio Bastos, Dona Maria, and after this I have worked at Quinta do Zambujeiro winery until October last year, when my employment was terminated due to the pandemic outbreak. During the two years that I have been employed, the dream of completing my PhD never left me. I tried to live this postponed dream trough the articles about wine I have been writing to the local newspapers: Diario do Sul and Diario do Alentejo.Since I became unemployed in October 2020 into a decimated job market with options limited by the pandemic, I realized this could be the perfect moment to create my own opportunity: develop my research project in an extremely important area for the wine industry business: To study the impact of soil management practices in the soil and grape associated microbiome". With this purpose I have invited Professor Ana Alexandre, Professor Isabel Brito and Professor Maria João Cabrita, from Evora University, whose work has succeeded in this field. This project will allow knowledge transfer between research institutions and industry . A distinct opportunity in such cooperation arrangements will be a mean to share similar concerns, skills and expertise between universities and wine industry &business. The conclusions of this project will benefit both winegrowers and winemakers in helping them to understand the major reasons of their risks and problems, improve management practices at vineyard and cellar, understanding their distinctive autochthonous peculiarities will also provide important economic returns.Besides the reasons mentioned above, I have proved through my life path that I am self motivated, a hard worker, I have realistic goals and aspirations, and I wish to make a contribution to the betterment of wine society as a whole.
