Carlos Miguel Miguez Barroso was born in Lisbon on the 30th of September 1964. In 1983 he entered to the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon where he graduated in Biology (Branch of Faunistic Resources and Environment) in 1988. In early 1989 he was hired by the company Aquiveste-Promoção de Atividades Piscícolas Lda. as an Aquaculture Technician, where he worked until the end of 1990. In March 1991 he joined the Biology Department of the University of Aveiro (UA) as a trainee assistant. At this university he presented "Provas de Aptidão Pedagógica e Capacidade Científica" (equivalent to a master's degree) in 1995, moving up to the rank of Assistant. He obtained the PhD in Biology at the same University in 2002, becoming Assistant Professor, which he holds until the present, with a definitive appointment since 2007. In 2021 he obtained the title Assistant Professor with Habilitation. Between 1994 and 2005 he belonged to the research unit Centro das Zonas Costeiras e do Mar (University of Aveiro), and since 2005 he has been an integrated member of the Associated Laboratory "Center for Environmental and Marine Studies" (CESAM), attached to the Research Group Aquatic Toxicology and Risk Analysis. His main research areas are Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Ecotoxicology, Marine/Estuarine Ecology, Aquaculture and Fisheries. He has published 71 SCI-WoS scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, which, to date, have presented a total of 2360 citations, corresponding to an h-index of 27. He published another 7 scientific articles of another type and was co-editor of a book in the area of ecotoxicology and environmental contamination. He participated in several national and international conferences, being co-author of 94 scientific communications. He carried out the review of scientific articles for 28 international journals indexed in Scopus / WoS and participated as co-editor in the journal Hidrobiologica for the area of aquatic resources management. He participated in 8 funded research projects, having been principal investigator on two of them. He supervised 3 post-doctoral students, 7 doctoral students, 21 master's students and 57 undergraduate students. He participated in juries of 23 PhD exams (15 outside the UA, 4 of which abroad) and 41 Master's exams (3 outside the UA). He took part of the organizing committees of 9 dissemination actions at the UA (e.g. conferences, workshops, etc.), participated in 2 training actions in Brazil and presented 10 lectures at the invitation of companies (Editora Leya, Education) or academic/scientific institutions, in Portugal (5) and abroad (5). He was involved in 5 services rendered by the UA to the community, one as a person in charge (to the company C-Food SA), and in the others as a team member (to the Autonomous Board of Porto de Aveiro, to the Administration of the Port of Aveiro and to the company Impacte , Ambiente e Desenvolvimento, Lda.). He is co-author of 6 technical reports carried out in the context of service provision and other works. During his career at the University of Aveiro, he taught 13 curricular units (UC) of 1st cycle courses and 11 UCs of 2nd cycle courses, having exercised the role of responsible teacher in 7 UCs. Since 1991, he has held university management positions, namely, Director of the Master's Course in Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, Director of the Master's Course in Eco-toxicology and Risk Analysis, member of the UA Ethics and Deontology Council, Departmental Coordinator of the program Socrates/Erasmus, Departmental Coordinator of the Leonardo da Vinci program, Member of the Pedagogical Committee for the degree in Biology and Geology, and inherently the Scientific Committee of UA.
