Luis Miguel Mota Ferreira. He is Auxiliary Researcher (career) at Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico. L.M. Ferreira is graduated in Chemistry and obtained is PhD (Univ. de Lisboa) with a thesis on the development of polyethylene based materials by grafting copolymerization induced by gamma radiation and their application in biomaterials area (synthesis, physico-chemical characterization and biocompatibility studies). He is a research materials-chemist working at C2TN Center of IST, UL, and his work has been mainly devoted on the preparation, modification and functionalization of macromolecular materials (polymers and hybrid materials) by ionizing radiation techniques, principaly for biomedical and environmental applications, catalytic processes and conservation/preservation of cultural heritage artefacts. He has a large experience in gamma irradiation geometries and processes for sensitive materials and products. For almost 6 years, he was the Technical Director of unique Portuguese semi-industrial cobalt-60 irradiation facility located at CTN/IST (UTR - Unidade de Tecnologias de Radiação). He is the scientific supervisor of the Laboratory for Macromolecular Materials and respective area of research at C2TN/IST, UL, being one of the two national experts in the preparation and functionalization of macromolecular materials through ionizing radiation techniques. Attended several scientific meetings, with more than 100 communications (oral and poster), which more them 25 were invited talks. Author and co-author of more then 40 publications in Referred Journals. Participated as team leader or member in more than 10 research projects; currently he is the Chief Scientific Investigator of 2 of them. Oriented more than 20 students, including graduation, PhD, MSc and ERASMUS students and Pos-doc researchers. Also participated in scientific dissemination actions and as supervisor in Programa Ciência Viva internships and lectures. He maintain regular activity as reviewer for several journals of international circulation (e.g. Nuclear Instruments & Methods - B, Radiation Physics and Chemistry, Polymer Science, Nukleonika, etc), and presently is guest editor of the Journal Membranes for the special issue "Biocompatible Membranes. L.M. Ferreira has an established multidisciplinary network of well-known and respected national and international collaborators as so a close collaboration with national Universities and the IAEA (projects and as expert on radiation processing of advanced materials in Technical Meetings, Workshops and Training Courses).
