Carina Peres is currently a Post-Doctoral research fellow at Prof. Adriana Santos' lab (3DS - Drug Discovery, Development and Safety group) at the Health Sciences Research Centre (CICS), integrated in the University of Beira Interior. Carina has a BSc and a MSc degrees in Biochemistry awarded by the Universidade da Beira Interior. She concluded her PhD degree in 2020 in Pharmacy (specialty: Pharmaceutical technology) awarded by the Faculty Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon. Carina started her research carrier in 2009, when she was awarded with an Integration into Research Grant in cancer biology field, at the Health Sciences Research Centre (CICS), integrated in the Faculty of Sciences - Universidade da Beira Interior. Carina participated in other research projects in cancer field during her Master Thesis in Biochemistry at the Universidade da Beira Interior, and then, at the University of York, during a summer research internship funded by the prestigious International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IASTE) scheme. Later, Carina developed her PhD studies at Prof. Helena Florindo's lab (iMed.ULisboa) in the development and assessment of a breast carcinoma vaccine based on a multifunctional engineered-nanoparticulate system able to target dendritic cells (DC), as well as to modulate immunosuppressive cytokine levels at tumor microenvironment. In 2020, she started a Post-Doctoral position of a LaCaixa-funded international consortium (CoVax, LCF/TR/CD20/52700005) on COVID nanomedicine field, involving iMedULisboa (Lisboa, Portugal), and Tel Aviv University (Tel Aviv, Israel). Carina is also participating in other 3 international research consortia, namely i) LaCaixa-funded international consortium NanoPanther (LCF/PR/HR19/52160021) on pancreatic cancer nanomedicine field involving iMed.ULisboa (Lisboa, Portugal), Prince Felipe Research Center (CIPF) (Valencia, Spain) and Tel Aviv University (Tel Aviv, Israel), ii) FCT-funded project NanoMetBrain (PTDC/BTM-SAL/4350/2021), on melanoma-brain metastasis nanomedicine field involving iMed.ULisboa (Lisboa, Portugal), IMM (Lisboa, Portugal) and Tel Aviv University (Tel Aviv, Israel), and iii) FCT-funded project NxGNanoTher (UTAP-EXPL/NPN/0041/2021), on breast cancer nanomedicine field involving iMed.ULisboa (Lisboa, Portugal), IMM (Lisboa, Portugal) and University of Texas (Austin, USA), in which she has a core function. Overall, Carina interacted with more than 50 authors (+10 nationalities), publishing in total 13 articles, 4 book chapters, and 5 conference proceedings with a cumulative impact factor of 134 and a total of 446 citations. The publication list includes top specialty journals, as Nat Nanotech, Adv Drug Deliv Rev, J Control Release or Acta Biomater. Carina also presented her work at several national and international meetings (8 oral communications and 18 posters). She was supported with 4 travel grants from renowned scientific societies to participate in highly recognized international meetings, including the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the Association for Cancer Immunotherapy (CIMT). Also, Carina was awarded 2 travel grants by the European Commission sponsored COST Mission (BM1402) to enroll in a training school at MRC Harwell (UK) and another at Novartis (Basel, Switzerland). She had also been part of the team of 5 FCT-funded projects, and 2 international consortiums. Carina is also involved in the lab management and is actively mentoring and/or supervising PhD and MSc students, and undergraduate students (research training within Project curricular unit at FFUL). Also, she has been involved in the organization of 5 national and 1 international scientific meetings.
