João Carlos de Oliveira Mascarenhas Mateus. Since 2015 Principal Researcher at CIAUD - Research Centre in Architecture, Urbanism and Design, Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon. Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Technical University of Lisbon, 2001). Master of Sciences in Architecture, Conservation of Historic Towns and Buildings ( Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, 1992). Degree in Civil Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, 1987). Research assistant at the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation - Belgium (1993-1995). Expert for the Directorate General of Culture at the European Commission to assess and evaluate European projects aim to preserve and restore Cultural Heritage (1993-1998). In Rome, at the Università La Sapienza, he prepared his Ph.D. dissertation on traditional masonry techniques of construction and their use in the conservation of historic buildings (1996-2000). In Rome, he designed and directed the restoration works of the Portuguese Institute and the Portuguese Pontifical College (1996-2003). "Cultore della materia" at the Faculty of Architecture Valle Giulia (La Sapienza University, 2002-2004). Between 2003 and 2006, he was the technical coordinator of the candidature of Baixa Pombalina (Lisbon downtown) to the World Heritage List. Auxiliary Researcher (FCT Compromisso Ciência Program), from 2009 to 2014, at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra. From 2015 to 2020, he was awarded a research contract of excellence (Investigador FCT/FCT Researcher). He organized in 2010 and 2015 the First and Second Portuguese Conferences on the History of Construction in Portugal. He was one of the coordinators of the First International Congress on Luso-Brazilian Construction History (2013) and co-coordinator of the Organizing Committee of Second International Congress on Luso-Brazilian Construction History (2016). Founder (since 2015), president (2018-2021) and present vice-president of the Portuguese Society for Construction History Studies (SPEHC). Member of the editorial committee of the International Journal of the Construction History Society (Cambridge, UK). He was the chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 7th International Congress on Construction History (7ICCH, Lisbon 2021). SCOPUS Identfiers: 57190181685 and 58041350600.
