Paula Vilarinho graduated in Ceramics and Glass Engineering from the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal in 1983 and got her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from UA in 1994, in the field of Relaxor Ferroelectric Materials. Vilarinho is an Associate Professor at UA since 2000 and a Senior Researcher of the Associate Laboratory, CICECO- Aveiro Materials Institute (UA). Vilarinho is currently: - Vice Director of CICECO; - Vice President of the European Federation of Materials (FEMs); - President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM); - Member of the Board of the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (DEMaC), UA; - Coordinator of Master Program on Additive Manufacturing of UA; - The leader of the Electroceramics Group, within CICECO. She was President of SPM, from 2013-2019. She was Coordinator (Portugal) of the Emerging Technologies Program within The University of Texas at Austin-Foundation for Science end Technology (FCT) Portugal Program (Collaboratory for Emerging Technologies, CoLab), from 2013-2017. She was visiting Professor at - Department of Materials Science and Engineering of North Carolina State University, USA, in 2001; - at Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK in 2008; - and at McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas, USA, in 2015. She was Director of Undergraduate Course in Ceramics and Glass Engineering (UA) from 1999-2001, and Director of the Undergraduate Course in Materials Engineering (UA), from 2009-2016. She was the coordinator of the Scientific Commission of the Department of Ceramics and Glass Engineering (former DEMaC) UA from 2002-2006. She was former President of the Portuguese Society of Microscopy (2010-2011). She was vice-president of SPM, from 2009-2013. She is a member of Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Processing and Application of Ceramics¿, Materials (MDPI), and Frontiers. She is a member of Portuguese, European and American Materials, Ceramics and Microscopy Societies. She has been frequent reviewer in Portuguese and European R&D projects (European Research Agencies) and National Science Foundation (NSF) USA, as well as various SCI journals. Her teaching topics include: synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials, such as 0D-3D Nano Structures, Advanced Materials, and Advanced Processing Techniques, Functional Materials, Materials Processing Technologies, Materials for Additive Manufacturing; Additive Manufacturing Technologies; Nanotechnologies, Properties of Materials, among others, for undergraduate, master and doctoral studies. Vilarinho published >345 papers, 10 book chapters, with ca. 9889 citations (h-index google scholar = 51, h-index webofscience = 46), 10 patent applications and edited 5 books. She has given >200 scientific/technical talks at international conferences and 135 invited talks. She has(is) supervised(ing) 22 post-docs, 29 PhDs, 61 Masters. She has been coordinating >20 R&D projects and involved in >20 European R&D actions, networks and projects on materials. She organized 10 International Scientific Meetings and >12 National and International workshops on Materials Science. She was distinguished with the prize “Estímulo à Excelência”, February 2007 awarded by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her profile and scientific career were distinguished in the book “Successful Women Ceramic and Glass Scientists and Engineers: 100 Inspirational Profiles” by Lynnette Madsen, Willey, 2016. Her contribution to the science of Ferroelectrics was distinguish in the book “100 Years of Ferroelectricity 1921 – 2021”, by Julio A. Gonzalo, et.al, World Scientific Publ. Co., 2021. Her contribution to Science was highlighted in the “Women in Science” project, a tribute to Portuguese women scientists and a Ciência Viva project (March 2023).
