Sandra Vaz obtained her PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences/Neurosciences, in 2011 by Univ. Lisbon (UL). In 2012, she started a postdoc at iMM focused on the tripartite synapse concept, implementing several state-of-the-art models to study astrocytes and the Ca2+ imaging technique. Gradually she achieved scientific autonomy, and her own research line became more defined: to study astrocyte role in health & disease conditions, at synaptic, circuit, and behaviour level. Her scientific independence and capacity to supervise students and manage projects have permitted me to coordinate a small team since 2015, as part of Dr. Sebastião Lab at iMM. In 2018, she become an Invited Assistant Professor and in 2023 she became a Assistant Professor at the Medical School of UL, where she teach at the Neurosciences Master/PhD program, at the Integrated Master in Medicine (Pharmacology & Neuropharmacology) and is responsible for an optional curricular unit related to Ca2+ signaling and electrophysiological recording. Sandra Vaz authored 53 papers in international peer-reviewed journals with over 1350 citations (H-index 21); in the last 5 years, she published 25 papers, some in top journals, such as Nature Neuroscience, Cell Reports, Cerebral Cortex, Cell Metabolism, or ACS Central Science. In 2021, she also published a Book Chapter on Astrocytes in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. She secured independent funding since 2018 as PI (>300k EUR), and she has been involved in the scientific and administrative management of several other projects. In 2021, she was awarded the International Society for Neurochemistry Career Development Grant. Moreover, in 2021, she was awarded the MSCA Seal of Excellence from the 2020-MSCA-IF-2020 call. Sandra Vaz has supervised to successful completion 1 post-Doc, 3 PhD and 18 MSc students. She has created a solid collaborative network, including Dr Stadlër (iNANO, DK), Dr Crunelli (Cardiff Univ, UK), Dr Araque (Univ Minnesota, USA), Dr Franco (Univ. Barcelona, ES), Dr. Gareth (St Andrew Univ, UK), Dr Deglon (Lausanne Univ, Switzerland) with student exchange and joint publications. Her work has been distinguished through invitations to lecture in national & international research institutions (iNANO) and at scientific conferences (European Purine Meeting 2019), as well as to Chair in national meeting symposia (Portuguese Society for Neuroscience-SPN & Portuguese Society of Pharmacology-SPF). She was engaged in Scientific Meeting organization (SPN2019; SPF2018; 8th Mediterranean Neuroscience Society Conference) and in outreach activities (Next Einstein Forum 2019; Pint of Science 2021; Brain awareness week). She is regularly invited to be an examiner at PhD and MSc theses defenses. She has been invited as editor in the Journal Front Cell Neurosci. and reviewer for several journals . She is a Member of the Board of Portuguese Glial Network, Treasure on the governing board of the SPF and a member of Cost Action CA20135. She served as Board Member in the iMM Postdoctoral Association (2018/2019) & Member of the Outreach team of the Portuguese Glial Network (2019/2021). Currently, her group has a core team of 7 members: 3PhD students; 3MSc students, which states her expertise and capacity to continue and strengthen her scientific output and contributions to the field of neurosciences, in particular the glial cells field.

2005 - 2012 I have participated in the teaching of the Experimental Course in Neurosciences, from the moment of my entry at the Laboratory of Neurosciences (2005), until the date of its discontinuation (academic year 2011/2012).
