Miguel Geraldes Rodrigues is a post-doctoral researcher at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam (IISG), currently working on the Portuguese and Spanish slave trade in Asia for the project The Global Business of Slave Trade: Patterns, Actors and Gains in the Early Modern Dutch and Iberian Slave Trade (Dutch Research Council, NWO - 406.22.FHR.024). Miguel obtained his PhD in History at the European University Institute (Florence) in 2019, with a dissertation on the early modern Iberian slave trade, examining its financial structures, trade networks, and role in shaping Iberian Atlantic societies between West Central Africa and Spanish America, with a focus on colonial Angola. He holds an M.A. in History at NOVA University (Lisbon). His research and most relevant publications focus primarily on the involvement of the Portuguese and Spanish empires in the slave trade between the 16th and 18th centuries, particularly the role of state sponsored monopolies, financial agents, and business networks built around it, as well as the role of Iberian empires and slavery in shaping colonial societies, and the military history of the Portuguese in Africa. Miguel has previously worked and collaborated with different research projects in Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, most recently as a research associate in the Department of History at Lancaster University in the project 'Towards a Digital Archive of the Atlantic Slave Trades: Unlocking the Records of the South Sea Company' (UKRI - AH/W005514/1) exploring and mapping the slaving accounts of the South Sea Company in Spanish archives. Earlier, Miguel was a post-doctoral research fellow at project 'VINCULUM: Entailing perpetuity, the social agency of a corporate body (Southern Europe, 14th-17th centuries)' (European Research Council - Grant Agreement 819735) at NOVA University (Lisbon), where he helped map the institution of entails (Morgadios) in the Portuguese empire, and explored the relationship between the institution of entails, slavery, and creolization in the colonial societies of Cape Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe, and in collaboration with Ana Madalena Trigo de Sousa, Arthur Curvelo, Rita Nóvoa and Maria Teresa de Oliveira, he published "VINCULUM. Entailment societies. Entails in the Portuguese Atlantic (14th-17th centuries)" (Coimbra, 2025). Miguel was also a research fellow at the project Revisiting Dutch Brazil and Johan Maurits (Gieskes-Strijbis Fund) hosted at the Maurithuis in The Hague, where he investigated the association between Dutch and Iberian agents and merchant networks of different empires operating transatlantic slave business, and their role in fostering the growth of the Atlantic links between West Africa and the Americas (1600-1654), and a team member of Documenta Filipina – The Philippines in Portuguese Archives and Libraries (1506-1832) (Embassy of the Philippines)
