Ricardo Mendes completed a first degree in 2009 and an M.A. in 2011, both in Chemistry at the University of Porto, Portugal, with his master thesis focused in the preparation and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles, and in the electrochemical study of polyoxometalates and thin films (in supervision by Prof Cosme Moura and Prof Cristina Freire). In 2013 he enrolled in the doctoral program in materials chemistry under the supervision of Filipe Almeida Paz at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials in the preparation and structural modification of new Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). He focused in the preparation of MOFs based on lanthanides self-assembled with polyphosphonic acid linkers, and studied the effect of the single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of these crystalline materials in their catalytic and photolumescence activity. In 2017 he enroled in interdisciplinary project with BOSCH in partnership with the University of Aveiro for the study of MOF materials capable of adsorbing harmful gases (such as NOx, SOx, CO, H2S, NH3, volatile organic compounds) to be used as filters in indoor portable air purifiers. During this time, Ricardo Mendes also improved his crystallographic expertise, being responsible for the data acquisition and structural solving of hundreds of crystalline structures using Single-Crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. As of April 2019, Ricardo Mendes holds a position of Junior Researcher granted in the 2017 CEEC public tender, granted for the research study of new MOF materials for energy applications,. His scientific interests have then focused in the improvement of these materials and preparation of MOF/membrane composites for application in electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells and batteries, having been granted the "Young Researcher Award" by CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials in 2021. These works and his collaboration network allow the publication of 67 research papers published in international peer-reviewed SCI journals having more than 1200 citations, as well as the publication of two book chapters in the MOF field.
