Currently, I am enrolled in the PhD program in Psychology at Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon. My research examines the role of intersectionality in activism among Lusophone migrant women activists and non-migrant/native born Portuguese activists. Being U.S. born to Native Portuguese parents, I have a unique perspective regarding the challenges faced by immigrants/migrants, including experiences related to acculturation and intersectional discrimination/prejudice. By current endeavours include involvement in local social movements/activism related to human rights and intersectional social justice in Portugal and participating in the Health for All (H4A) research group at ISCTE-IUL. I earned a Master in Arts, Counseling degree and have worked as a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 20 years, specializing in trauma, including childhood, generational and social injustice-related trauma. I have extensive experience teaching in Master in Counseling programs and conducting mental health trainings, particularly related to trauma and cultural humility, to social workers and mental health service providers. Also, I have been invited as a guest lecturer to teach content related to racism, gender issues and intersectionality for classes of Master level students at ISCTE-IUL. Furthermore, my professional and personal background related to immigrant experiences, multicultural issues and intersectional activism has forged a path for my interest in further integration of intersectional policies and practices in Portugal.
