M. Ventura graduated in Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST-UL) in 2001. In 2008 she got her PhD degree in Chemical Engineering at IST-UL. As part of the PhD program, in 2003 she attended to the first year of the Master in Engineering Physics - Applied and Nuclear Physics at Faculdade de Ciências - University of Lisbon. Having a strong component in analytical chemistry, the PhD consisted on the determination of the selenium content in food and diet samples typical from the Portuguese diet. In 2008 she started working as Post Doc researcher in LAQV-REQUIMTE at FCT-NOVA in straight collaboration with the Research Unit Vicarte. From 2008 to 2014 she developed work consisting mainly on the synthesis and characterization of coloured glasses using alternative methods such as the sol-gel route and the Layer by Layer assembly. As a team member of the project PTDC/CTM/103664/2008, M. Ventura was also involved in the synthesis of biocompatible porous materials based on biopolymers. The developed work between 2008 and 2014 had in common a strong component in synthesis and characterization of the materials. During this period M. Ventura published 5 papers in international journals, 1 book chapter and submitted 1 national patent (No PT 107200 of 2015). She was involved as team member in 4 projects financially supported by FCT. She applied 3 times for the funding projects as PI in FCT, calls of 2008, 2013 and 2014 and, despite not funded, the last 2 projects were evaluated with an overall rating of 7. She was co-supervisor of 1 MSc (2012) and 1 PhD (2016) thesis. After a brief interruption for maternity purposes, M. Ventura returned in 2016 to FCT-UNL to the Materials for Adsorption and Catalysis (MAC) group at LAQV-REQUIMTE. The group shown interest on the biocompatible porous materials synthesized by M. Ventura before 2015 to be applied as adsorbent materials and/or catalysts. As a fellow associated to the project IF/01242/2014/CP1224/CT0008, “Mesoporous carbon for biomass transformation - a world of efficient, cheap and sustainable catalytic possibilities”, M. Ventura developed work on the synthesis of porous membranes based on carrageenan, a natural polymer extracted from red algae, for application in the heterogeneous catalysis of esterification reactions. While in MAC, M. Ventura has also been applying the natural polymers to develop porous aerogel materials for the adsorption and controlled release of molecules (mainly drugs). In the last 5 years, M. Ventura participated as team member in an application to European projects and FCT projects, and applied to 2 FCT projects as PI. The FCT proposals, “Alternative porous MATerials as delivery systems for hormone controlled release on THYRoid dysfunction therapeutics” and, “Novel Chlorella sp. food products and supplements obtained by selenium fortification and processing by radiation technologies” were well rated, but funding was not approved. Since 2016 she co-supervised 6 final projects of degree students from Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 5 MSc thesis of Chemical, Renewable Energy and Technology and Food Safety Engineering. Since January 2022, she is co-supervising one PhD student in Chemical Engineering and one MSc student from Biochemistry. During her research activity developed from 2001, M. Ventura published 26 articles in international peer reviewed journals with 307 citations and she has a h-Index of 11. She is the corresponding author in 8 published publications. The main subject areas of scientific production are diverse: Materials Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Food Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Nowadays, M. Ventura is trying to build a bridge between the research activity developed in the past, in the Food field, with recent research activity as a MAC member, in the Materials Science field, in order to establish a more integrative approach to her scientific path.
