Nicolas Schaeffer obtained his MSc degree in Environmental Engineering in 2012. After being awarded with an Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) PhD scholarship, he completed a PhD in Environmental Engineering at Imperial College in 2017. Between March of 2017 and December of 2019, N. Schaeffer was a post-doctoral researcher at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro. During this period, he was involved in an international ERA-MIN project regarding the recovery of critical metals from NiMH batteries recycling. From 2019 to 2024, N. Schaeffer was a Junior Researcher at CICECO under the NormaTransitoria framework, developing more sustainable processes for the recovery and recycling of critical metals from various waste streams using a mixed experimental and computational approach. N. Schaeffer is currently an ERC starting grant holder (101116461 — DESignSX) investigating the design and application of advanced solvents for the liquid-liquid separation of critical metals. N. Schaeffer published 45 articles in international peer reviewed multidisciplinary high impact journals (ISI, h-index 18) including 12 as corresponding author. He completed the supervision of 1 postdoctoral student, 8 MSc students and 4 BSc students and he is presently involved in overseeing 1 Junior Researcher, 3 PhD and 2 BSc students. He is actively involved in 2 ongoing R&D projects including as the CICECO lithium-ion battery recycling task leader in the "Next Generation Storage" PRR project.
