Albina Dolores Cardoso da Silva Castro Resende

Albina Dolores Resende began her academic journey with the completion of her Bachelor's degree in Aquatic Sciences at ICBAS - U.Porto in 1996. She then followed a Master's degree in Marine Sciences - Marine Resources (specialization in Marine Biology) at ICBAS - U.Porto in 1999, followed by a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at ICBAS - U.Porto in 2008. During the Bachelor's Internship in an ERASMUS mobility program, she conducted research in the Immunology field at Wageningen Agricultural University - The Netherlands, under the supervision of the renowned immunologist Prof. Maria de Sousa. This experience was crucial, after the BSc graduation, to obtain a FCT grant (BIC) within the research project titled "T Lymphocyte regulation of epithelial and phagocytic cell storage: Genetic Hemochromatosis (GH) and Gaucher disease (GD) as models", led by Prof. Maria de Sousa. Throughout this period, three articles were published in indexed scientific journals (e.g. "Expansions of CD8+CD28- and CD8+TcRVbeta5.2+ T cells in peripheral blood of heavy alcohol drinkers." and "T-cell receptor repertoire in hereditary hemochromatosis: a study of 32 hemochromatosis patients and 274 healthy subjects.", among other publications. These emphasized the significant importance of T lymphocyte subpopulations. The experience and knowledge gained in the field of Immunology currently prove to be of great significance in co-supervising a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at IUCS, with the project titled "Deciphering the Omentum Immune Signature in Acute Appendicitis". During her MSc and PhD periods, she worked as a member at the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) - U.Porto on several projects, benefiting from 2 FCT grants. In these projects, she developed expertise in histology and cellular biology (ultrastructure), with toxicological and biochemical associations. This background was essential for the initiation of her teaching activities at CESPU, in subjects related to Microscopy, particularly with long experience in Electron Microscopy teaching. Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Professor at Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde (IUCS-CESPU), where she coordinates and teaches Histology and Embryology in various BSc, MSc and Integrated MSc degree programs at IUCS. She is the ERASMUS Pedagogical Coordinator for the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences from IUCS as also a member of this Course Committee. In addition, she is a researcher at the One Health Toxicology Research Unit (1H-TOXRUN) and a research collaborator of Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR - UP) and Oral Pathology and Rehabilitation Research Unit (UNIPRO - IUCS). She has been involved in several projects (two as a PI) in the field of Medical and Health Sciences, with main interests in "histology", "ultrastructure", "organ disorders", "experimental toxicology", "ovarian cancer", and more recently, with special foccus in "immunological microenvironment". She has 17 publications in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals and holds an H-index of 6 (Scopus). She has supervised and co-supervised several BSc students during their final research project work and co-supervised one MSc dissertation. Currently, she has two BSc students and a PhD student from IUCS. She has also served as a jury member for several academic theses/dissertations, in addition to being a reviewer for scientific publications. She has organized and participated in several scientific events, in which she received 2 prizes for the "Best communication".
