Dr. Isabel Santos Vieira (ISV), publication name Isabel C. M. S. Santos, got her BSc-Honours and her PhD (FCT individual grant - New compounds with polyoxometalates (POMs): synthesis, characterization and application in oxidative catalysis) degree in Chemistry, respectively, in 1998 and 2005, at the University of Aveiro (UA). Isabel Santos Vieira was also awarded with a FCT grant to pursue her post-doctoral activities, in poly-insaturated terpene epoxides: new methodologies of synthesis and cyclization in new products, at UA-QOPNA between 2005-2009. Since June 2009 she has gained some autonomy as an Assistant Researcher, at the University of Aveiro, more focused on the study of environmentally sustainable oxidations of organic compounds with green oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide, and metalloporphyrins or polyoxometallates POMs) as catalysts (CAT). Different approaches were applied to prepare the POM CAT: POMs and different organic cations; grafting POMs to organic linkers in order to prepare covalently linked heterogeneous CAT. Homogeneous and heterogeneous CAT: biomimetic oxidative valorization of natural and other organic substrates; oxidative transformations of organic compounds in the presence of benign oxidants as H2O2 or O2; S-containing organic compounds, asymmetric CAT. Also the new area of interest was drug delivery systems using POM as the drug it-self, encapsulation of bioactive POMs into non-toxic macromolecules matrices or embedding them into a stable polymer shell-starch, or as the drug carrier, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, since they provide analgesic and antipyretic effects. Since 2014 Isabel Santos Vieira was on maternity leave for almost 1,5 years, and between 2016 and 2019 she was working as a postdoctoral fellow in the UA with an international company (ZSPharma-AstraZeneca) under a confidentiality agreement, and therefore without the possibility of publishing any of the results, including a patent, since it already existed for the material involved. However, all the work included studies in order to implement the synthetic process at an industrial level according to FDA requests, for later approval. Despite confidentiality it is possible to say that she has been working with zirconium silicate materials as non-absorbed drugs to treat renal, cardiovascular, liver, and metabolic diseases. These materials are very promising since they have very good exchange properties. All the studies carried out led ISV to acquire considerable experience in techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction; scanning electron microscope; energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry; X-ray mapping; transmission electron microscopy; 3D optical profilometry; solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance; FT-Raman spectrometry; rheology (strain controlled rheometer); static contact angles (contact angle system OCA20 goniometer). ISV is currently a Researcher (01/2019 ¿ up to date) at the University of Aveiro and CICECO- Aveiro Institute of Materials, and is currently working in the synthesis of porous silicates, improving the methodology used to a sustainable one, for that ISV has been applying some mechanochemistry approach in order to reduce or even eliminate all water in the synthesis of these materials, which have been applied in the glycerol acetalization, with very good results. Isabel Santos Vieira published 35 original papers in SCI journals, with an accumulated impact factor of 108 with over 998 citations (h index of Hirsch 19 ¿ SCOPUS). Some of these papers were published in journals with high impact factor in Chemistry. In addition, she is co-author of 19 oral communications, more than 70 poster communications, presented in several scientific, national and international, meetings. When she started the assistant researcher position, she has been involved in the supervision of some students (graduation, post-graduation and master).
