Helena Albergaria has a PhD in BIOTECHNOLOGY (Biochemical Engineering specialization) and is an Assistant Researcher (career) at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology IP. (LNEG) at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit (UBB) since 2007. Graduated in Chemical Engineering (Biotechnology specialization) from Instituto Superior Técnico, she has an MSc degree in Food Science and Technology. Her research has been mainly focused on the study of yeasts physiology, microbial interactions in complex media such as wine fermentations, as well as in the production of biofuels (bioethanol) and bioproducts. In recent years she coordinated 2 R&D projects as principal investigator (PI), projects BIOPEPTIDES (2011-2014) and BIOCONTROL (2017-2022), during which a new biocide secreted by Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and composed of antimicrobial peptides was identified and characterized, and its potential as a natural biopreservative in wine and bioethanol fermentations evaluated. She participated in 17 R&D projects, funded by national and international entities (14 national projects and 3 European projects). She supervised 1 PhD thesis, 4 master's theses, 3 undergraduate theses and more than 17 students integrated in R&D projects, as well as short-term internships of international PhD students. She published 24 papers in SCI journals and presented 63 works in international and national scientific meetings (25 oral communications and 38 panel communications).
