Ana Luísa Machado (ALM) is a young and talented graduate student researcher experienced in biomedical sciences. ALM received a master degree in Biochemistry applied to Health, M.Sc., in 2019 from Escola Superior de Saúde of Instituto Politécnico do Porto. Previously, ALM graduated in Biology, B.Sc., in 2016 from Faculdade de Ciências of Porto University. During her master thesis work, at i3s/IPATIMUP in the Epithelial Interactions in Cancer (EPIC) group, under the supervision of Dr. Sérgia Velho, she was focused at understanding the impact of activating KRAS mutations on the crosstalk between colorectal cancer and immune cells, and on the development of immunesurveillance escape mechanisms. Then, she integrated the Tumor Microenvironment Interactions (TMI) group at i3s/INEB under the supervision of Dr. Maria José Oliveira, as a master fellow, being dedicated to dissect the relevance of CCL18, an immunesuppressive chemokine in colorectal cancer. Actually, she is in a technical position, at i3S/INEB, and her main responsibilities are to assist INEB cell culture rooms, to maintain the cell culture bank, sample thawing and freezing, media preparation, mycoplasm PCR tests, and also assist optical/fluorescence and transmission electronic microscopes sample preparations. Since 2019 she is also an Invited Assistent Professor at Escola Superior de Saúde from Instituto Politécnico do Porto. Her pratical expertise compreends the molecular biology, biotechnology, medical and health sciences fields, in particular cancer cell culture, gene silencing, RNA extraction, qRT-PCR, Western blot analysis, primary human monocyte isolation, macrophage differentiation and functional assays, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry. Distinct professional experiences, including a cancer research position, a laboratory technician venue and an university guest professor vacancy gave her the scientific proficiency and mindset required to succeed and to project her career.
