I have undergraduate studies in Environmental Engineering (5-years, 2005), and a Master's degree in Territory and Environment Management (2-years, 2009). The MSc thesis was on landscape patterns of wildfire spread in northern Portugal. By the time I completed the MSc, I realized that the results, although significant, kept a shadow over the historical process that made it difficult to build comprehensive solutions based on socioecological change. My research in natural sciences has since been combined with research experience in history and social sciences. After a period of interruption of academic activity (2009-2012), during which I worked in Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, I started my PhD with a grant awarded by FCT that I would complete at 2018. I traced the degradation of soil fertility and the transition to chemical fertilization in Portugal (1870-1960) throughout the contrast of the discourse of agronomists and farmers, the agricultural statistics, and a model designed to account for plant nutrients flows in soil. The use of distinct methods was critical to validate the findings from both the archive and the nutrient model. This combined history of soil and agriculture and an effective dialogue between environmental sciences and history are the main achievements of my PhD. This would not be possible without several close collaborations with environmental and social historians and ecologists. Between July 2019 and March 2021, I was hired by IPMA (Met Office Português) within the scope of the FIRESTORM project, where we studied the newly extreme wildfire events in Portugal and the background of fire-climate changes from 1980 to 2018. In parallel, I have been working with two interdisciplinary research teams dedicated to the history of fire within a socioeconomic and environmental framework and to the history of rice during the Modern period in the context of transatlantic technology transfers. More recently, I was awarded with a 3-year scholarship from the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA Lisboa) to develop the proposed work plan on the political economy and political ecology of pine and eucalyptus in Portugal from a historical perspective. Overall, my current research interests address agricultural, forestry and rural changes in Portugal, from the 15th century to the present, focusing on the relationships and interdependencies between biophysical and social processes.
