Vanessa Otero is an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of conservation science and technical art history, aiming at the preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage. Her investigation using the Winsor & Newton 19th Century Archive Database has impacted the preservation of artists' materials found in heritage objects internationally. Her strong analytical skills have also enabled her to make significant contributions to the field of nature conservation. She is a Junior Researcher of the LAQV-REQUIMTE R&D unit and a collaborative member of the VICARTE R&D unit, with a PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (specialisation in Conservation Science) obtained in 2018. She has secured funding for her research through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, raising >500k by winning a contract in the 2020 Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (3rd place) and projects as principal investigator and co-coordinator. She is also the PI responsible for the research collaboration between the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the NOVA School of Science and Technology (DCR NOVA FCT) and the international company Winsor & Newton COLART Ltd. She has an h-index of 18 with 29 papers in peer-reviewed journals and >2000 citations (WoS), indicating her research's international impact. Furthermore, her work has been disseminated at national and international conferences with 44 oral (including invited talks) and 24 poster communications, having 13 conference proceedings and 4 book chapters. Since 2011, she has collaborated with the DCR NOVA FCT in the BSc, MSc and PhD courses, co-supervised 3 PhDs (1 complete; 2 ongoing), supervised 4 MSc (3 as co-sup.) and several curricular projects, including Erasmus internships. Moreover, she is co-responsible for the DCR's analytical infrastructure, its financial management and coordinates the authentication services of artworks by the Portuguese Modern painter Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918). She has engaged in knowledge dissemination activities for the general public, on art and science, with emphasis on art forgery (2 magazine papers, 4 invited talks for school students and several workshops). She also participated in 1 TV documentary and 1 documentary film on Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. Her multidisciplinary research has enabled her to establish a national and international collaborative network, including renowned institutions such as the Gulbenkian Modern Art Center, the Courtauld Institute of Art, the Politecnico di Milano and the Slade School of Fine Art.
