João has a Master's Degree in Biopharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, and a Degree in Pharmacy obtained from Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa (ESTeSL - Lisbon Polytechnic Institute). His research career has been mainly related to the area of inflammation, including inflammatory bowel disease, colitis-associated cancer, and periodontitis, through the development of reliable animal models of disease and the evaluation of potential pharmacological approaches. Currently, João is a PhD student (iMed/Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (FFUL)), intending to develop iPSCS-derived 3D in vitro liver cultures to evaluate the biological machinery involved in idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury, allied with the identification of predictive biomarkers. Furthermore, he is also interested in discovering biomarkers that define key stages in the Healthy-to-NASH/MASLD transition, using liver microphysiological systems. João is also an invited assistant professor at ESTeSL (Degree in Pharmacy), lecturing on the curricular units of "Farmacologia e Toxicologia", "Farmacoterapia II", and "Farmacoterapia III". At the moment, he has collaborated on 8 funded projects and authored/co-authored 11 articles (6 as first author), published in international research journals, 11 oral communications, and 2 conference posters.
