I completed my PhD at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and received my diploma from the Sorbonne Université, Paris in 2012. The success of the PhD was based on the my master in Biomolecular Archaeology (Distinction, 2003) and undergraduate degree in Environmental Archaeology (2.1 hons, University of Edinburgh, 2001). Ensuring best practices in excavation, recovery and curation of archaeological material is something I am passionate about. Consequently, I have been actively involved in the training of students, practitioners and members of the general public since my undergraduate. I am experienced excavator with extensive experience of project management working on sites from a large range of periods (PPNB to 19th century) and regions (Cyprus to Northern Scotland). I specialise in the integration of traditional archaeozoological methodologies with biomolecular and geochemical approaches to holistic research methodologies to investigate prehistoric herding. My main research interests are the long-term evolution and adaption of animal husbandry during prehistory in response to socio-environmental factors. In particular, I am interested in the role that herding practices played in structuring the economy and seasonal calendars of prehistoric communities. Finally, uncovering the long-term impact of domesticated animals on the environments, and the interplay between climate and human/livestock overtime and space. I am a leading expert in analysing mortality data from sheep, cattle and goats to determine prehistoric livestock husbandry and have been actively involved in developing cutting-edge statistical approaches. These have created new perspectives on human-animal relationships. Via the integration of stable isotopic analysis of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen, I have developed innovative research approaches to investigate pasture/foddering strategies and prehistoric land use. I am involved in a number of the collaborations with Portuguese and international colleagues, such as at the University of Bristol, University College London, University of Copenhagen and MNHN (Paris). These collaborations range from innovative proteomics methodologies to identify sex-specific pasturing practices as well as statistical development using Bayesian approaches to model sex ratios of prehistoric herds and determine production capacity for milk and meat. Currently, I am designing excavation strategies for investigating using biomarkers, such as lipids, human and animal diets in areas where there is little bone survival for example in acidic soils. Dissemination is at the heart of my activities, as demonstrated by my extensive publication record, many as the first author, where I have designed the study, recruited and analysed samples and wrote the final research article. In addition, I am regularly asked to be a peer-reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals, such as J.Archaeol. Sci, Scientific Reports, and World Archaeol.. I am an active member of the research community both at home and abroad, participating regularly as an event organiser or oral presenter at International conferences and round tables. I am a member of the International committee of Archaeozoologists (ICAZ) and the European Association of Archaeologists, and coordinator of the ICAZ working group on stable isotopes. In my capacity as board member for ICArEHB, and coordinator the 'Development of complex societies' group, I have developed a number of initiatives to support the scientific and outreach capacity of the center, such as the Seed fund for junior researchers, ICArEHB dialogues, stable isotope preparation platform.
