Abel J. A. Duarte did a pre-Bologna master's degree in the field of Chemometrics and, ten years later in 2013, he obtained a PhD in luminescent sensors at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto. From 1999 to the present he is a professor in the department of chemical engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Polytechnic of Porto. Abel belongs to the associated laboratory REQUIMTER since 2000 and since 2022 collaborates with the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Industrial Technology, CIETI. He has extensive experience in the development of luminescent chemical sensors, from molecular to nanometer and biological based sensors. He has already participated in 9 projects funded by FCT, of which "Carbon Dots as effective agents in photodynamic therapy" lasting 3 years was principal investigator. With an h-index of 11, he has published 18 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, (with a total of 560 citations), he contributed in the writing of 9 book chapters and participated in 16 scientific congresses and he has 40 publications in proceedings of international and 15 national conferences. He supervised 10 master's theses and more than 50 graduation projects. He has participated in numerous Doctoral, Masters and pre-graduate juris exams. Abel participated in activities to support teaching management, such as: directing higher education laboratories; President of the Competition Jury for the attribution of places or grants; member of the Jury of the competition for allocation of places or grants; he belonged to the Commission of the Pedagogical Council; and is deputy director of the Degree in Bioresources. Abel practices organic farming in his free time.
